The best cars. The best guns. Even my wife is older than me (but if anyone tells her I mentioned that here, I'll deny it).

    .38 Super Govt.
    .45 Govt.
    10mm Govt.
All of them...build all of them.

38 super LW Commander is what I still need, and a 10mm.

I keep thinking of calling .38 Super - .38 "Stupor" - because I'm pretty sure you have to be in a stupor to want one. Yet here we are, I'm currently trying to decide between a Kart, Jarvis, or Bar-Sto barrel... - I'm leaning Jarvis, because I can get it in DLC straight from them, but then it would have to be a drop-in fit, instead of a hard fit, because how would I ever hard fit a DLC coated barrel? That would take just short of forever.

Then again, it's like 95% bushing fit for accuracy anyways, so a drop-in might work.

Ugh, I'm cluttering up my own thread with my outloud thinking.

I've only put a few rounds through a 38 super. It was a one-off commander build if I remember correctly. It was still in the build process and the gunsmith gave me the opportunity to put a few test rounds through it. I wasn't really a fan of the caliber. It seemed more suitable to major power factor out of a comp gun.

Definitely ideal for that work. Although now that we have reliable 9mm major and workable .40 Minor it's very niche overall.

That said, the .38 Super does two things well. 1) Launch 124-125 grain HPs at nice velocities while still being shootable. 2) Feed well through two-piece Colt-style feedramps, better than 9 or 40, this is partially due to the OAL of .38 Super being closer to .45 than to 9.

Back in the day if you wanted a handgun bullet to punch through car bodies, you used .38 Super, this was before .357 Magnum. Quite a few G-Men and Texas Rangers used .38 Supers when man hunting. I can imagine a really good load would be a 125-grain Barnes Tac-XP bullet at about ~1200fps. That would likely do excellent in barrier penetration, general penetration, and expansion. In fact, if you look the Tac-XP factory load for .357 Magnum is 125-grain @1200 fps.

I had a Dan Wesson Guardian in .38 Super that I really liked, and had DW build my father a custom VBOB in .38 Super. They are a lot of fun to shoot.

The Lightweight Commander in .38 Super is really my “if you could only have one” gun.

I do in fact have one.

Since this is pistol forum, I should point out that I can sort of shoot it too. 5.9 FAST, even with my awful reloads.

You know, I was focused on something double stack, designed post 1970 for a little more capacity and then...this.
