This. The EDC 9 is even more 1911-esque and also has the external extractor but still is not a 1911 really.
I think the design elements of the entire EDC line are to make guns based on the 1911 but more suited to the 9mm cartridge. There are other differences besides just the extractor. Is an EDC 9 actually better than a regular Commander 9mm that runs properly? I dunno. Matter of opinion I guess.
I have two S&W 1911s, a .45 and a 9mm. Made the choice because of external extractors. S&W knows how to do external extractors.

Is the 9mm 1911 as reliable as the .45 version? I don't own either anymore. I can answer that my .38 super auto 1911 is one of the most reliable pistols I own, 1911 or otherwise.
Yes, just as reliable, but not comparable. The .45 is SS with the smaller, original extractor. But the 9mm is a SS Performance Center model with the later, larger extractor that S&W now uses for all 1911s. It came with Wilson ETM mags and that is what I use. I took a class with it right away and went through over 600 rounds with no malfunctions. Have shot it since in a few matches and practice. Still no malfunctions.

Sorry to bring back a dead thread... recently been bit by the 1911 bug, and while I am not yet sure if I’d want to carry one, based on experiences shooting a 9mm 1911 I certainly want to own one.
Does anyone have any experience with the dan wesson specialist in 9mm? I’ve got my eye on a 5” model that looks pretty appealing. If there is a reliability difference between commander and govt models, what does it look like? Does it equate to more frequent lubrication and cleaning?
I've been down the 9mm 1911 road a few times, and the guns I owned showed no difference in reliability between Government and Commander size. However, I do feel that a Commander is the ideal size for the 9mm cartridge whereas I prefer a Government model for 45 and 38 Super.
The 9mm 1911 is a lot of fun to shoot but can require more dedication to finding the right combination of magazines and ammo for your particular gun.
Finally, a 1911 needs to be lubricated properly in order to run reliably. I actually did the 2000 round challenge (no cleaning and no lube for 2000 rounds) with a 9mm 1911 and it performed very well but I wouldn't do it again. They will run dirty just fine but they should not be run dry.
These days I use 45 and 38 Super, and the Super is just as fun to shoot as a 9mm without the fuss. And my 45s never give me any trouble -- they just work.
