Cool idea and a good one at that. The problems with studying the brain are manifold, but not the least of which is that you're pretty much limited by needing the animal to be alive when you do the work (often anesthetized, but alive). Being able to put an animal down, but keep the brain functioning to study the brain is actually a nice step forward in terms of ethical treatment of lab animals. Not too mention it could pave the way for more invasive brain mapping techniques than can be done on live animals but cannot also be done on dead animals.
And also: What gun for zombie pigs?
