    Recommend Me: Wood 1911 Grips

I was sitting here staring at all the lovely Red Nichols leather holsters I have now, in black, natural, brown, with the smell of horsehide, kangaroo hide, and lovely ostrich leg accents that remind me that a dinosaur died to give me great leather to house my various 1911s in. And as I sat, I realized that, though I quite like the bright green SGM G10 grips I have on my main carry gun (I originally typed "carry Kimber", but that just seemed...wrong) - I need something that evokes an equal amount of passion as the leather my gun is wrapped in, when my hand wraps around it. In other words, it's time for me to get wood...

Specs: Full Size 1911, bevel bottom, no ambi-cut, standard thickness, checkered/carved/stippled in some form or fashion, and made out of walnut, maple, or osage orange

The last spec I can't stress enough, I'm allergic to all rosewoods/cocobolos/ebonies. Not really wanting stag or MOP, and I can't (won't) do ivory (mammoth or otherwise) due to professional ethics issues.

I'd love to find a set of black walnut that are carved/checkered in a Roper-like ribbon pattern. So far, I haven't found anything quite like that.

My go-to sources for wood 1911 stocks:

    http://ahrendsgripsusa.com/

I really like the full-checkered stocks from both of these makers. They have nice double-diamond stocks too for those who like them. The WoodCaliber site has a "build your own" feature that is pretty cool.

Ryan can probably get you anything you want if it’s not shown. He’s not the cheapest, just the best.

Eta: he can do checkering but doesn’t show it on the site.

I like the looks of her grips but unfortunately I'm a heathen who shoots only polymer pistols.

Laser engraved with darn near anything you want (that isn't a trade marked image). Have several sets from here, as do others friends... Tell Mike (one of the owners) that Powder sent you if you want to make him laugh.

Looks like his wait times have gotten a little longer than I remember. I had a pair of checkered French walnut gris for a blued Colt and they were spectacular. So much so that someone offered me double what I had into them so it wears VZ'z now.

Rob, I can't say enough good things about the grips I purchased from WoodCaliber. Excellent quality, fast shipping, and at a great price. You can usually only pick two of those consumer product traits at one time. Want high quality and fast shipping, it's going to cost you. Want fast shipping and a great price, then it's usually low quality. In this rare case, you get all three. Highly recommended.

I bought the Gov double diamond Black Walnut.

Challis Grips is a great choice. Brain and Nate produce some of the finest 1911 grips every made. Highly recommended. Pictures don't do them justice.
