That clamp is to hold the lid of the box in the open position. You'd open the lid all the way so it sits on top of the box, then slide that clamp over the hinged part. There was often a spotting scope mount on the inside of the lid that you could adjust so it'd fold into the box when closed and then bring up to place the scope where you could lean over and check your target without disturbing your foot placement.
