Thread: 1911 Newbie

I ask people coming to 1911s one question.

Do you want to save money, or do you want to buy guns?

'Cause if you want to save money, buy a Glock and go to the bank. Don't talk about budget and 1911 at the same time.

Make your first a Colt then go from there. Just my opinion of course.

The advantage of a Colt is that you're getting an intrinsically good gun, plus an excellent platform for any subsequent work without needing to re-invent the wheel.

1911s are best defined by budget:

    <$700 - HK USP in .45.

    <$1000 - HK45

    <$2000 - Dan Wesson

    <$5000 - Wilson or Nighthawk

    >$5000 - Full Custom

You can buy a Colt or Springfield for less than a grand these days. If you don’t know how to fix it yourself, you’re rolling the dice, simple because you may need to diagnose and repair issues (e.g., extractor tension). The best Colts these days are ~1000-1200. At which point you’re into Dan Wesson territory. I see no reason to choose a Colt over a DW.

Google "Dan Wesson Duty Treat Issues" or "Dan Wesson galling"

I'd have bet money "galling" was figured out by gun manufacturers at least 30 years ago, but maybe not.

Buy a Colt. Send it to a gunsmith who knows 1911s for a “reliability tune.” Shoot it.

That certainly may have been your experience, but that comment does not match my experience with Colts in recent years. I've owned a bunch of them and they have not been problematic. I concede that Colt should be more consistent in their QC but they generally build good guns using good parts.

Dan Wesson offers a real good gun for the money, but they have their share of issues as well -- especially their stainless models.

I would recommend Dan Wesson for the <$2000 category and add Ed Brown to the the <$5000 category.

Man, it's crazy that we have a categories that ends and starts at $5k.

OP, i got nothing for you. Basic with checkering is not a thing in the OTC 1911 world
