This was the first time I’ve ever read Playboy solely for the article.
Time well spent. I may not agree with all of the Duke’s viewpoints but he was surpisingly thouighful and well spoken.
Are you now, or have you ever been a member of the Doodie Project?
He was on a keto diet?
Nothing new under the sun!

Read the article. Thanks for sharing. I took no offense. I understand that context matters when reading things from our past (and even from our present).
What offends me is calling something offensive simply because it does not conform to the prevailing viewpoint - or at least the viewpoint that certain groups want to prevail.

Thanks for sharing. A couple of things: It is interesting the interview mentions Wayne's financial struggles. Although his films made money, the issues of "Hollywood accounting" bedeviled him. Also, having grown up in the Newport Beach area, we knew local resident Wayne as a big spender. He lived large. He too was willing to get into risky investments, as witnessed with the Panama anecdote. It is refreshing he was honest, to a degree, about these issues. He was a passionate man who risked his fortune to make The Alamo and The Green Berets.
Regarding the homophobia, given his long time in the Hollywood movie industry, my guess he was more tolerant than what he appears to be in the interview. He knew his audience was a conservative middle America that looked critically at the rapid social changes of the time. Hollywood is about illusions, and Wayne had an image to protect.
As for the comments about socialism: The more things change, the more they remain the same. People are still reciting the same tired arguments now, pro and con.
