I'm 6'1 and wiry, and have a big beard and a smooth head.
Naked with a shotgun will either scare 'em or make 'em helpless with laughter. Either serves my purposes.

Nothing stays on the nightstand. I have 3 kids ages 6, 4, and almost 2. The older 2 have basic safety training on a roughly monthly basis with empty guns and the oldest has live fire and field (squirrel hunting with a .22) experience as well. That said, every night I pull something out and every morning it goes back. The J-frame sits a few feet away on my dresser and goes in my pants pocket every morning.
Nightstand is either a G45 or 92A1 with X300 attached. Loaded mag, empty chamber, no holster. I figure it's easier to rack a slide than try to clear a holster that's not attached to my belt. 99% of the time I have a long gun out as well. It's either a suppressed 10.3" carbine with Aimpoint T1, X300U, loaded with 55gr 5.56 Gold Dots (two Pmags coupled...99.9% of malfuctions are mag induced [/sarcasm]) empty chamber; or it's a 21" Benelli M2 with a mag tube of 8rds LE1321B (Flitecontrol #1) + 1rd on the lifter, empty chamber, X300 mounted in front of the forend.

A nightstand with an egregious number of books; my phone; my watch; my dog.
I have a kid, and my gunsafe is in my dressing room. I do not rank home invasion high on my list of concerns, or I wouldn't be abroad 200 nights a year.
