Much of what you said was true at one time, but there has been a lot of progress with 9mm 1911’s, and the magazines, in recent years.

I spent years carrying 9mm 1911’s on duty, put tens of thousands of rounds through them, shot them competitively, in training classes, SWAT schools, etc. They were boringly reliable. Several guys at work have bought 9mm 1911’s after shooting mine, and have not had any issues either.

I just feel like I’ve owned too many of them, and have them run perfectly, for my experience to be unique.

I think the key is to spend some money and buy one from a company that knows how to build them. I really like Ed Brown guns, but won’t buy one in 9mm. One of their biggest dealers has told me on multiple occasions to steer clear, because EB just doesn’t have it figured out yet.
I respect that your experience may be different from mine, but I am still seeing the same issues, even with very new (2017, 2018) Wilson guns with the latest ETM magazines. The magazines just stop feeding the first round with no warning. Perhaps I have not found the magic combination of pistol, magazine, and load, but my .45 and 9x23 guns are much more reliable than any of the 9x19 1911-pattern guns I have tried.

I pretty much only use the current generation of ETMs and Vickers mags anymore, haven’t run into any problems yet.

Really the only issue I remember having with the older ETMs was the top round creeping forward when firing, making it difficult/impossible to remove the partially loaded mag to do a tac reload or whatever. It was annoying, but didn’t affect function when firing.

Ive had best results across multiple 9mm 1911s with CMC mags. Wilsons 9mm mags have been inconsistent.

Are you seeing any nosediving of the top rounds, especially magazines pulled from pouches? My biggest issue with ETM magazines has been the round to be fed being jammed into the barrel ramp, requiring the slide to be locked back and the magazine stripped from the pistol. Happens in every gun I try once the magazine starts to do it. Perhaps not every time, but enough that I use the magazines only for failure drills or range sessions at home.

Sometimes the top round will be slightly nose down in the magazine, but I’ve not had it cause any FTFs, definitely nothing like you’re describing, in any of my DWs or Wilsons.

Interesting. I thought my magazine catch might be holding the magazines a bit low, but the magazine is just shy of striking the ejector.

I am going to try some of the CMC magazines, if I can find any. I have used Mec-Gar, Metalform (both regular and "Springfield Ramp"), and the Wilson magazines.

Have you reached out to Wilson at all? A Wilson guy should definitely run with Wilson mags.

I think I’ve only used CMC mags in .45, but have had good luck with Metalform and Checkmate 9mm mags as well.

I recently grabbed a DW Valor commander in 9mm (they’re being discontinued). It has been 100%, with me having to relearn my grip coming over from Sigs to prevent the slide from locking back.

The Vigil gets you a lot for the dollar, and is only available as an aluminum frame.

I don’t know how much holster selection would be limited, but you get a huge value for the dollar with a DW Specialist (only comes with a rail). I would go that route if you prefer a steel frame, Vigil if aluminum.

I've had excellent results with an older Wilson Combat 5" 1911 (it's an older "Protector"model, not the one they make now with the rail) and a Dan Wesson Valkyrie 4.25" Commander with aluminum alloy frame.

The Wilson Combat is trouble-free when I use Dawson Precision 10-round magazines with 124 gr. JHP's and 124 gr. FMJ's

Not near as many rounds through the Dan Wesson, but I haven't had any functionality problems with it when using Ed Brown 9-round magazines with the same ammo.

I load 9, even in 10 rounders to ensure seating on a slide forward reload and it helps the nosedive issue.
