Thread: Old New Item

There is a known problem with shells deforming in box-fed shotguns. I am not sure, however, if this is due to the vertical spring pressure in the magazine, or if it is due to the design of the weapon itself. Supposedly it's the pressure against the bolt in the Saiga that causes this, and not the magazine itself.

Either way the plastic shell was never designed with a box magazine in mind.

I'm still holding out hope for the Calico shotgun, not seen since SHOT 2012. A helical magazine is the best solution for high-capacity detachable 12 gauge magazines.

It's also bulky as hell. In my opinion, it would be worth the attempt to make detachable tube magazines that you can *also* top off via the lifter/loading gate. Thus providing the ability to both top off the tube and change it out if shit hits the fan and you need more shells ricky tick.

Have you never been to the Philippines? That's Rico Suave in Manila.
We may lose and we may win, but we will never be here again.......

Just once, for about a week, about 5 decades ago enroute CONUS from the land of Nuoc Mam.

The only things suave then were the Jeepneys.

Thanks jellydonut, the shell deformation is what I was thinking of.

Sounds like I need to stick with Italian semi-autos that start with B...

Shell deformation is definitely a concern for any box fed shotgun. Most of the Saiga guys store their guns bolt back, with a full magazine inserted, this seems to solve the problem. But I think it’s important we remember box-fed guns are really meant and designed for competition work.

For now the tube fed shotgun remains the way to go.

This is one reason I had such hope for the Six12. Relatively quick reloads, without concern for shell deformation. Also easy to unload for transport in places where long guns cannot be loaded. Alas, the Six12 is stillborn, I believe. It didn’t even show up at SHOT this year as near as I can tell.

IF they are reliable the price is quite good.

    Thank you.
I have been perusing 3 Gun forums and whatnot and haven't found much on magazine shotguns. Mossberg 930 and Stoeger M3000 seem to be the shotguns to use for economical/entry-level reasons. I won't win any 3 Gun matches but I could use a 12 gauge; I use to have a Remington 870 but bills needed to be paid. I started yesterday's match with a pump but quickly realized if you want to shoot fast, semi-auto shotguns were what you needed. I switched to my buddy's 930 and shot faster but reloading was slooow. So, I was thinking about magazine fed shotguns. Use it for 3 Gun matches, and for home protection. I don't know. Still pondering...
