They were a pretty rough crew when I last visited near 20 years ago. (Especially to the North African population from what I witnessed firsthand.)

No doubt they have their hands full and things aren't getting any easier (or better).
There's nothing civil about this war.

None of that's changed. French cops are not known for being nice. They also use police dogs much more commonly as force multipliers than it feels like we do here in the US.

When I lived there briefly ('07) most of the major railways/tourist sites/public places of importance had french soldiers with rifles, gendarmerie (military police with domestic jurisdiction), and local police with big dobermans.

There has been a lot of strife between local north/west african communities (Especially in urban 'banlieues' where gov't housing, or HLMs, is concentrated) and 'mainstream' france - mostly the gov't and middle/upper classes - for reasons that are complex. Blame belongs rightfully in both camps. Interestingly, the latest gilets jaunes protests were pan-French society - not limited by race or social/political niche.

    Anyway.

With my MOST SINCERE APOLOGIES to the seriousness of this thread - and I hope they run down the wackos who perpetrated this. RIP to the innocents and speedy recovery to the wounded. Just makes me crazy to read/see anything but the real name for this Season.

Can we all say: CHRISTmas? Please?

Given the topic, I think this might be one of those moments where it's best to keep one's grammatical preferences to one's self. Just a thought.

I've thoroughly enjoyed working with French police.

    Belgian police are awesome too.

No fucking around with protestors like our police have been reduced to. We saw a mounted police Calvary charge. Like, brah, a legit charge. Not just some horses moving in slowly to push back protestors. Extra length batons raised in the air, full fucking speed ahead....

    Sorry to anyone I've offended.

It's the French. They have always loved a good, hell-for-leather cavalry charge.
