I switched to rechargeable AA and AAA batteries years ago and I too have experienced good performance from the Eneloop brand. Amazon usually has the best price. I use an inexpensive Tenergy brand charger that has worked well, also.
The path of least resistance will seldom get you where you need to be.

yep, Eneloop are the best, but also get a decent charger like a Maha.

For a deep dive into batteries.

So I have to ask, at $110 which is far higher than other chargers, why?

Don’t know about that one in particular, but here are a few things I learned from a brief encounter with the Candlepower Forum battery discussions:

Some inexpensive chargers don’t detect and regulate each cell individually. They use the same charging sequence for pairs or the for the whole unit.

Some inexpensive chargers vary the charge sequence by number of cells(more cells = slower charge) regardless of that state of each cell.

Better chargers have more sophisticated charging algorithms: soft start & stop, resistance detection, etc., all of which supposedly gives longer cell life than simple on/off.

Better chargers have charge/test/discharge cycles that can supposedly “revive” weak cells.

My take is that it is important to have a charger that regulates each cell individually. Some of my devices use three batteries and so charging by pairs didn’t make sense.

Ok, I am ready to get on board.

How would this look for a starter kit?

It looks like the 808 can do C and D cells, which are not common.

If all you’re using is a lot of AA and AAA, the 800 should be fine:

I’ve got one that allows more user input(geeks will geek....) but if kids are going to be using it that’s probably not a plus.

    @Rich_Jenkins

This might be worth your consideration, with or without the "quick" charger:

There's nothing civil about this war.

    Thanks.

I was just thinking, how many "normal" AA and AAA I have floating around our small condo...

Remote controls...AAAx2, AAx2 (many, I dunno, six or seven)

    Electric Door Lock...AAx4 (1)

    Dog Walking Headlights AAAx3 (2)

    ...not to mention hobby related:

    Commander Shot Timer AAAx4 (1)

    Ear Defenders AAAx2 (2)

Flashlights AA, AAA (exact number of flashlights I have is classified )

    Hmmm...

Another Eneloop user here...I think that's the right path. Also, the AA Eneloops can also be used in C and D cell adapters. Note that there are a number of generations of batteries and chargers. There is a reviewer on Amazon who has done a lot of testing on them across multiple generations..."NLee the Engineer", probably the top reviewer on the links both Rich and Blues posted. Worth taking a look at those before taking the plunge, especially on the chargers. I think he is a fan of the newer BQ-CC55 quick charger over the earlier BQ-CC17, which itself was an improvement over earlier models. I'm looking at the CC55 to replace my older Sony branded charger.
