Threading Old Rem 870 Barrel for Bead Sight Question

    Hello,

I want to install a bead sight on an older Rem 870 WM plain barrel. The original bead sight flew out of barrel during firing. The barrel has through hole in the barrel that is not threaded. Remington replaced the original bead about 10 years ago.

According to Remington, the barrel uses a .146 x 48 bead sight.

Would this size require an oversize tap for threading or just the 6-48 tap?

    Thanks!

The 6-48 tap has a diameter of 0.1200". I would measure the hole in your barrel before proceeding. I would opt for a sight with a larger diameter, like the 8-40, which has a diameter of 0.1405". Both choices are available from Brownells.

    Calipers measured hole as .103"

    Thanks

Based on that, the 6-48 would be oversize and provide more surface area to "hold" onto the barrel. I would drill and tap, use a good thread locking compound, and let it cure for about twenty-four hours.
