SD ammo is one area where I'm not at all interested in chasing down the new hotness.

    Isn’t that the truth!

I’m happy with my J Frames for anything I’d need a snubby for (I expect the larger frame CA revolvers in .45 ACP, .45 Colt and .41 Mag. are pushing Glock 26 size) but I’m seriously thinking about getting a “Southpaw” left handed .38 just as a curio.

To answer the question, no, I wouldn't. Having investigated hundreds of shootings, my recommendation is to stick with common duty calibers and a heavy-for-caliber loading with a bullet that retains mass (ie, nothing that fragments, sheds a jacket, etc.) Other then expense and hipsterism, you gain nothing going to the more "exotic" calibers. Ammo manufacturers know where the bulk of the market is and their R&D is geared toward that. You won't find anyone optimizing a short barrel .41 mag load because the five people who'd be interested in it aren't worth the cost.

Cowboy loads in short barrel guns perform poorly. I've had a .44 penetrate the victim's abdomen to about 6", which is insufficient.

Other than as a hand-held flashbang I can't think of any reason I'd want to use a .41 magnum short barrel. There are too many proven, cost effective, and readily available alternatives.
The three revolvers I have now are two aluminum framed 38spl's and a Bulldog in 44spl .. I have shot the 44Spl quite a bit over the tens years I have owned it .. the two 38's , one has been shot more than the other ... mostly LWC and test fire carry ammo .. My main carry pieces are semiauto pistols , mostly Glocks ... Once upon a time I carried revolvers more ..
Im leaning away from the Charter 41mag after 2nd thought and imput here on this site ....
    And thanks for your imput

Probably about the only "modern" 41 load you're going to find. Will it expand when fired from a snub?

Two more choices although the listed velocities probably mean neither load will be enjoyable from a snubbie.

A whole lot of re-gripping going on. Looks like fun!

It probably wouldn't be too bad with the original 210-grain LSWC load, though. Well, aside from the leading...

I imagine something like this loaded to around 1,000 fps would work well for 2- and 4-legged animals.

The best answer in lead bullets is always a LBT design WFN.
