Steven Crowder on a college campus: this is how you talk to people who disagree

I’m sure some here are familiar with the plucky conservative Canadian from "Louder with Crowder."

In this clip, we see that he’s set up a booth on campus, with the banner "I’m pro-gun; change my mind." He excerpts two different conversations with students, from the respectable gathered crowd, about shootings and gun control; they both proceed largely the same. I think he does a fantastic job dealing with the idealistic—who also get all their info via big box sources. The clip/episode is sorta long at an hour; if you see him work with the first guy, you get tne gist of his method. I think there are some good things to emulate in his approach to the conversations. Recommended if you’ve got 25 min of TV time to spare.

He looked at what was motivating the person, found common ground, and made arguments that support a reasonable position by appealing to that motivation and common ground. That is how it is done.

    The undeniable power of propaganda.

The interviewees are obviously intelligent, but their positions strongly influenced by a steady stream of anti-2A misinformation and their own ignorance. That in itself is mighty scary, but both seemed reasonably open-minded to explore the other side of the debate.

    Thanks for sharing the video.

A strategy diametrically opposite the “Fuck Non Conservatives ” approach commonly used by pro gun media outlets.

Listening to it now. With my perspective that gun control is a weapon in a culture war, it's interesting to me that both of the interviewees seem to start with a fuzzy notion that "there's something wrong with our culture" in the area of guns. They really want to change the culture, and banning guns is the way they want to do it.

The "change my mind" series has been quite good, especially to give example of how to talk with the college kids.

"Googling" statistics TOGETHER, and providing filters for those stats, can also have a dramatic effect. When they see that the stats provided by legit sources, are contrary to what they believe, they start to doubt the sources of their mis-information
