    RFI: Volquartsen VM-22 for Appleseed

It appears that my local club will be hosting an Appleseed marksmanship clinic this summer: https://appleseedinfo.org/. I'm considering purchase of a Volquartsen VM-22 for the clinic: https://volquartsen.com/families/vm-22-rifle. I've never done an Appleseed and am interested to know if the Volquartsen would be a good choice. Thanks much. From the Big Empty, ELN.

Pretty much any functioning magazine fed .22 rifle is a good choice for Appleseed. Drills are mostly run catering to the .22 rifle at 25 yards, and most any off the shelf rifle can meet the accuracy requirements. The 10/22 is pretty much the standard, but the Marlin 60 is also popular. I got a Marksman patch with a heavy barreled bolt action Savage using five round magazines. If you already have a .22, then only get the VQ if you just really want it. If you don't have one, a VQ is a pretty good way to correct that.

If I ever do another one, I'll probably use an AR. Just because. You can use a centerfire rifle. People have used pretty much anything and everything.

As a huge Volquartsen fan and owner of more than a few, I would recommend the Volquartsen Lightweight, 22 LR with Hogue Stock, over the VM-22, as I find the Hogue stock to be a perfect fit. I am not a fan of the Magpul stock. I much prefer the Deluxe rifles with the straight-fluted bull barrel. In any event, buy from Rimfire Sports & Custom.

I don't know anything about Volquartsen, so I may be out of my lane. If so, feel free to ignore the following.

The two Appleseed events that I've attended seemed to really focus on Ruger 1022's with aftermarket peep sights. They had several loaner rifles available, and I used one on my first Appleseed.

The second time around I used an fairly basic AR (S&W M&P 15) and made Rifleman. I wouldn't buy a new rifle for Appleseed, unless you just really want a new rifle.

I'm sure you'll have fun either way. It's a good program. And the marksmanship instruction was very reminiscent of what I received in the Marine Corps.

I have a 10/22 with a Barracuda style stock and a Kidd lightweight barrel. I would guess it would be around the same weight as the VM-22. I find it too light for repeated offhand accuracy. It is much better with a 7 oz suppressor on the end, but still not what I would call a stable rifle. I have no idea of your physical abilities or ailments, but I wouldn't recommend a rifle that light, for an able bodied man, for Appleseed.

    Thanks!

Gentlemen: Thank you for the input. I don't "need" a new rifle but, I don't "need" much of an excuse to buy one either. First Stop Gun Shop in Rapid City, SD has a good selection of Volquartsen rifles in stock. I'll lay hands on some over Thanksgiving. From the Big Empty, ELN.
