Man in critical condition, officer hospitalized after shootout while fleeing San Antonio police

A man is in critical condition and an officer wounded after a shootout Thursday evening at an intersection north of downtown.

San Antonio Police Chief William McManus said the incident began when a woman called police about a threat from her boyfriend.

“What he said he was going to do was he was going to ‘shoot up the place,’” referring to her home, the chief said. “Fortunately, the officer got there before he did.”

McManus said the officer was heading to her home when he encountered the man three blocks west of the intersection of Culebra Road and Interstate 10 West.

The man saw police and drove away. But when he got to the Culebra and I-10 intersection, he wrecked his car and crashed into two other vehicles, the chief said. He then tried to carjack another vehicle.

The man then noticed the officer pursuing him and shot him, striking him once in the forearm, McManus said.

The officer returned fire, striking the man three times, including once in the torso and twice in the leg, the chief said.

Both were taken to an area hospital. The man is in critical condition while the officer is stable, McManus said.

No one else was injured in the incident.

McManus didn’t name the man, who’s in his early 20s, but said there were six warrants out for his arrest, including intent to commit assault, telephone harassment and burglary.

The officer has been with the department for five years and will be placed on administrative duty until he recovers, the chief said.

New York City Jail Officer Charged With Killing Teenager While Off Duty
Investigators were exploring whether a so-called gel blaster toy found at the site of the fatal shooting had played a role.

A New York City correction officer was charged with murder on Thursday in the fatal shooting hours earlier of an 18-year-old man in the Bronx, the police said, with investigators exploring whether a toy weapon found at the scene had played a role in the killing.

The officer charged in the case, Dion Middleton, was off duty when he shot the victim, Raymond Chaluisant, in the face near the intersection of the Cross Bronx Expressway and Morris Avenue around 1:35 a.m., the police said.

Mr. Chaluisant was in a friend’s car on the way to a hospital when officers responding to a 911 call found him about a half-mile from the site of the shooting, the police said. He was taken to St. Barnabas Hospital and pronounced dead there, the police said.

Officer Middleton, 45, was taken into custody later in the day at the Correction Department’s firing range, where he works, after investigators had scoured video footage from surveillance cameras in the area where the shooting occurred, officials said.
In addition to the murder count, Officer Middleton, who joined the department in January 2013, faces charges of manslaughter and criminal possession of a weapon, officials said. It was not clear whether he had a lawyer. A spokesman for his union, the Correction Officers’ Benevolent Association, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Louis A. Molina, the city’s correction commissioner, said in a statement that the “very serious charges” against Officer Middleton “are in no way a reflection of the officers who work to keep our city safe every day.”

“This officer will be immediately suspended without pay, and if the charges are true, he will face the full consequences of the law and be terminated,” Mr. Molina added.

A spokeswoman for the Bronx district attorney’s office did not immediately respond to a request for further information about the case.
The police did not provide a motive for the crime but said a so-called gel blaster had been found at the scene. There was no evidence as of Thursday night that Mr. Chaluisant had fired or even aimed the device at anyone, officials said.
A gel blaster is a type of toy gun that shoots gel beads made of water. Such weapons are often used in military-type shooting games and generally considered to be safer than so-called airsoft guns, which have a similar purpose but fire plastic pellets.

Shortly after announcing Officer Middleton’s arrest, the Police Department’s public information unit posted a message on Twitter noting that gel blasters are illegal in New York City.

“Bead Blasters shoot gel water beads propelled by a spring-loaded air pump, making them an air rifle,” the message said. “Air rifles are a violation in NYC & are unlawful to possess. Violators found in possession of these will be issued a criminal summons.”

A Police Department spokesman said the message had not been specifically prompted by the killing of Mr. Chaluisant but by several recent episodes in the city involving water-bead weapons.

The law enforcement authorities in other states have warned that the use of such devices could lead to deadly violence. In at least one instance, the grim prediction has come true.

The Akron Beacon Journal reported last month that Ohio officials said a 17-year-old boy had been killed there in an attack that began after he and several friends fired a water-bead gun at a group playing basketball near a school.

What a complex situation. The MPD acted incredibly with a bunch of innocents. I was so impressed how they handled the mom and kids evacuating through a door they had just been shot at through.

    Excerpt from news story:

"I heard a pop,” said Mike Fleming, a manager at Carpet Liquidators, which is near the intersection where the shooting happened. “There was an older fella that was out of his truck. Looked like he was in pain,” he said.

Seattle police said it began as a road rage incident that escalated to a confrontation, then a shooting.

“It’s too sad,” Fleming said. He added that he spoke with witnesses down the road who saw what happened.

“The one guy wouldn’t let the other guy in, and sounds like he got out of his vehicle and approached the other guy at a stoplight, and that’s when he got shot,” Fleming said.

Police said they found the 68-year-old victim with a gunshot wound to the stomach. He was taken to Harborview Medical Center where he died.

    . . .

Fasano described the victim the victim as a kind man who loved hydroplanes, and was always helping others.

“Everybody owes (him). He was the neighborhood handy man, the guy who did everything, fishing, pluming, framer, he did everything,” Fasano said.

Seattle police said the 38-year-old man who opened fire called 911 and is cooperating with authorities.

KIRO 7 asked Seattle police if the shooter would be arrested or charged. SPD said detectives are still investigating. Police said they collected the man’s gun as evidence.

Luckily it wasn’t a shooting but it only wasn’t a shooting because the bad guys gun didn’t work. It’s also a great example of prey drive in humans and how planning to just run away like more than a couple of folks I’ve talked to can go horribly wrong, especially if you’re the attackers sole victim.

On July 24, 2022 at approximately 2:30 p.m., the LVMPD responded to a robbery at a
residence near the 2800 block of Faiss Drive. Officers learned the victim was returning
home and parked his vehicle in the garage. At the same time, an unidentified suspect
approached the victim in the garage and demanded property. The victim ran away and
the suspect chased him with a firearm trying to shoot him, however the firearm failed to
fire. The suspect then ran to a vehicle parked nearby and fled the area.

Daddy’s girl’ witnesses Alabama father’s killing during gun sale
    By Carol Robinson | crobinson@al.com

Sunday was supposed to be a happy daddy-daughter day, one of many Ricky Hamrick III and his 8-year-old daughter had shared while she visited him in Alabama for the summer.

They were taking a road trip together, with plans to finish off the day at Whataburger.

Instead, Hamrick ended up with a fatal gunshot wound to the head that police say happened during a gun deal brokered on Facebook Marketplace.

And his young daughter, who is preparing to enter the third grade, ended up covered in blood after witnessing something no child should ever have to endure.

Looks like the gunman's right hand is in a cast. May have had something to do with why he couldn't make his gat run.

Vermont McDonald's evacuated after live ammunition explodes on grill, police say
Employee with handgun surrendered to police in South Burlington, Vermont

A McDonald’s restaurant in Vermont was evacuated Sunday after an employee threw live ammunition on a grill and exploded, authorities said.

The incident occurred just after 5 p.m. inside the fast-food restaurant on Shelburne Road in South Burlington, WPTZ-TV reported, citing police.

An employee had reportedly removed ammunition from a handgun and tossed three live rounds onto the grill, police said. As the ammunition exploded, police said the employee continued to act erratically.

All employees and patrons were evacuated from the establishment. Police said no injuries were reported.

Responding officers negotiated with the employee, who still possessed the handgun and additional ammunition, the report said. The employee agreed to leave the gun inside and surrender to police.

The employee was taken to a hospital for evaluation. Police did not immediately release the employee’s identity.
