Consider, however, what our position is on the issue.

Governments are bad at predicting behavior of any sort, and many people do in fact say stupid things and do NOT carry them out.

We believe that responsible armed people are the solution, so I caution that we should not take too much glee in jumping on the NYSP or the clinician who performed the mental health evaluation last year. Even if a felony threatening charge were leveled (I am not familiar with the particulars of NYS law on this matter) it would be unlikely, absent other circumstances, that a juvenile would end up with an adult felony record that would disqualify him for the later firearms purchase. But again, is not our position that the problem is the restriction on sane law-abiding citizens, as opposed to expecting a real-world Precrime department?

Discord is a modern equivalent to the IRC chatrooms of old - mostly text based, but also with VOIP, video chat, and livestreaming capabilities. It was marketed towards gamers, but in recent years has attracted a more broad audience. Servers are invite-only, though it’s common practice for some communities to make the invite link freely available to all. This matters because, much like some of the radicalization efforts seen on Facebook years ago, it’s a simple matter for your radicalizer to identify potential recruits and private message them with something like “hey, if you like (topic of the server they share), you should check out (more radical server with some overlapping content). Here’s an invite.” Today’s online generation is often only a few links in a chain away from being in a chat room with literal, self-identifying nazis (as well as a plethora of other extremists).

Discord has done periodic content sweeps as more violent extremists have been shown to have organized on the platform. 4Chan or its more colorful spinoff, 8Chan (which was quite literally founded by people who thought 4Chan was too content-restrictive - this person posted links to his manifesto and live stream there, as did the persons responsible for the 2019 Christchurch and El Paso attacks, which were similar in nature to this attack), seem hesitant to seriously moderate, though I think both will eventually take down your mass murder livestream after a few hundred comments.

Keep in mind, the polite version of their business model is (almost) anything goes - their user base would likely see it as a betrayal if, for example, they weren’t allowed to post pictures of cartoon frogs with Nazi symbols. A milieu of extreme views are the norm on 4Chan and 8Chan. It’s a strange mix of teenagers posting things for humor’s sake (shock value is the trend), people seriously debating the finer points of claimed differences in IQ between the races, and actual, no kidding extremists furthering discussions towards points they’d like discussed. The more over the top you are, the more positive feedback you’ll get there. For the extremists, there’s a lot less need for subtlety in a place where Holocaust jokes are the norm. In a way, it’s difficult to tell the difference between some kid’s warped sense of humor and some guy who would fit right in at Stormfront. Discord plays into this because it’s kind of like a breakout room, where somebody looking for people to radicalize can invite prospects to a private chat. Your online loner suddenly finds a bunch of friends who think just like him - and have new content of their own to share. My assumption is that a search of this person’s online history will yield a similar radicalization path.

As I understand it, a user can have a private chatroom on Discord and limit its visibility. He used that feature as some sort of diary, where he kept track of his preparations. From what I read, he made it visible to those in the server about a half hour before the attack. Realistically, probably far too late for anybody to do anything.

But no, it’s unlikely that anybody reported anything until the gunfire began on his livestream - and even then, that’s only a maybe. Anybody who would have been on that server was a product of the environment described above.

Discord is an interesting platform. I joined recently, as I support a YouTuber who mostly reviews horror movies. Nothing political.

    Here's a summary on threat assessment. https://www.nbcnews.com/news/crime-c...t-pr-rcna29667

It contains a bit from Follman, whom I referenced before. While stigmatizing someone and denying gun rights gets us all excited, I think that a 15 minute chat with a young person with such threats is insufficient to determine whether a threat is a joke - if that is what happened. Delaying the ability to purchase a firearm for a long enough period for a threat assessment team to take a hard look at a person is a good idea. The other behaviors should be considered by more than one mental health professional for a short interview. Let the person have counsel if needed. Once you say in a public domain that you plan killing, the ease of exercising your gun rights might be slowed down.

Miami Township, Ohio: Woman dead after exchange of gunfire with police

    (AP)
    May 21, 2022 GMT
Police say an officer shot and killed a woman after she fired repeatedly on officers outside an apartment building near Cincinnati.

Chief Mike Mills of the Miami Township police department said the Clermont County communications center began receiving calls at about 5 p.m. Friday about an armed woman in the parking lot of the Berry Lane Apartments. Later calls said she had fired two rounds from a gun and had approached a resident, Mills said.

Mills said the woman fired at arriving officers who took shelter behind cars in the lot and then fired another round at an officer who aimed a gun at her. That officer fired six rounds, and the woman went down. Police said a medical aid flight was called but the woman was pronounced dead before she could be flown to a hospital for treatment.

The woman’s name hasn’t been released pending notification of her relatives, and the name of the officer who fired also wasn’t immediately released. The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation will investigate the shooting.

Mills said “mental health” is believed to have been a factor in the case, but police don’t believe a prior dispute with someone at the complex was involved because people there said the woman appeared to have been firing indiscriminately.

He said officers have training in handling people with mental health issues and an on-staff mental health worker was at the scene from the beginning, but that person could not be brought in while the woman was still firing rounds.

The surviving robber got 30 years:

“This violent robbery could have ended much worse,” Prosecutor Luke Nichols said. “Ingram and his accomplice threatened and terrorized the store employees, and we are all grateful none of them were injured. The citizen who intervened likely saved their lives that night. A quick and thorough response by PAPD took another violent offender off the streets of Port Arthur.”

Ingram has several prior felony convictions and was out on supervised release at the time of the robbery."

Suspect in custody after shots fired at two SAPD officers

A 22-year-old man was in custody Sunday night after two San Antonio police officers were shot at earlier in the day.

Tyler Ashbaugh was charged with aggravated assault on a peace officer after the early morning incident in the 14000 block of O'Connor Road.

According to Lt. Michelle Ramos, two uniformed officers were completing paper work inside their marked patrol unit around 2:20 a.m. in a church parking lot when an SUV sped toward them at a high rate of speed.

As the vehicle approached, the officers heard gunshots and saw a muzzle flash.

    Neither policeman was injured.

Both got out of their patrol car and one fired back as the speeding car drove off.

A vehicle matching the description of the SUV was found at a home in the 4500 block of Buckmoor Street.

Ramos said shell casings were found in the car and at least two shots were fired at officers.

She added police spoke to the homeowner of the Buckmoor Street home, who cooperated and told officers a family member had borrowed the SUV.

Ashbaugh was located Sunday afternoon and taken into custody without an incident, Ramos said.

The two officers will be placed on administrative leave pending the investigation.

It drives me absolutely freaking bananas that some departments still have officers complete admin tasks like report writing in public, in their cars. Especially if both officers were doing it. Have we learned nothing?

Rhetorical question. Of course we haven't.

Toronto police fatally shoot man seen carrying rifle near elementary school

Officers responded to reports of a man in his late teens or early 20s carrying a firearm in Scarborough’s Port Union area

    https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toron...owns-1.6467895

A man shot dead by police after reports of a person with a rifle forced several schools into lockdown in Toronto Thursday in fact had a pellet gun, Ontario's police watchdog says.

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) also says the man was 27.

The watchdog agency said Friday that police were called to the scene just before 1 p.m. and located the man about 20 minutes later.

He was pronounced dead at about 1:40 p.m.

Toronto Police Chief James Ramer said officers were called to the Port Union area of Scarborough for reports of a person with a gun.

At a news conference late Thursday afternoon, Ramer said officers were "confronted" by the man. Ramer declined to provide further details, citing the SIU's investigation.
Unclear if man was holding weapon when located

On Friday morning, the SIU confirmed to CBC News that a pellet gun was recovered at the scene. It's unclear if the man was holding the weapon when police located him.
Walking around with a long arm is stupid. So much for the days of the Chipolte Twins. MUH RIGHTZ and the sounds of incoming gun shots.
