Bad guys in NYC were painting real guns orange and lime green to create confusion among responding LE at least as far back as the early 1990's.

On a related note, have any of y'all seen the Taurus pocket pistols being offered in white/yellow an white /pink ? I saw them in the case at my local Academy and thought it would be easy to mistake them for toys.

More info at this link: http://www.policeone.com/investigati...replica-rifle/

From the picture of the replica rifle in the article, I can understand why the police would be alarmed.

    Thanks.

From another news story on this this incident:

"Rodrigo Lopez told the Press Democrat he last saw his son Tuesday morning.

“I told him what I tell him every day,” he said in Spanish. “Behave yourself.”"

Possible language barrier involved / a factor ?

    JLW,

It is my understanding the proletariat of California, Peoples Democratic Republic of, can no longer open carry rifles and shotguns under legislation which went into effect January 1, 2013, in response to the shennaigans of Open Carry activists.

It's not weapons blazing at the sight of a toy gun.
Some food for thought in the context of what is reasonable:

    Also in todays headlines:
14-year-old arrested in murder of Massachusetts teacher charged as adult
    http://www.foxnews.com/us/2013/10/23...investigation/

and this incident which occured last year down here in TX:

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/0...n_1189506.html

Brownsville interim Police Chief Orlando Rodriguez defended his officers, saying the boy pointed the pellet gun – which was black and resembled a real gun – at police and repeatedly defied their commands to put it on the floor.

Wonder what and if the NAACP will say about those linked stories?

Almost proves a point about how a 14 year old "child" can kill with their bare hands.

Did they shoot the guy because he was simply walking down the road carrying a rifle and didn't immediately respond to commands, or did he make any sort of movement that can be construed as a furtive movement?
    Same question here.

I want to believe there aren't deputies out there who are gonna roll up on folks carrying a rifle (in some non threatening manner) and go zero to mag dump in no time flat.

The news story only relays the police version of the incident.

Who knows what the kid was doing: telling the "poppo" to eff-off, etc...or was he telling them it was a toy?

No matter what--the outcome was totally stupid. All parties (victim family and the PD) need to do some reflection on how things could have gone better in this situation.
