CBP officers kill U.S. citizen during shootout at San Ysidro Port of Entry

Customs and Border Protection officers shot and killed the driver of a white pickup around 7:30 Monday night after the man allegedly opened fire on officers after refusing to stop for inspections.
inspection area at the San Ysidro border crossing, according to San Diego police and a Customs and Border Protection spokesperson.

According to a preliminary investigation, the alleged gunman was driving a white pickup and refused to stop for Customs and Border Protection officers at the port of entry driver checkpoint, San Diego police homicide Lt. Matt Dobbs said in a statement released early Tuesday.

The man steered the truck through the inspection area until he was forced to stop by a vehicle blocking his exit.

“The suspect began firing a gun out of his vehicle toward the officers, then exited his vehicle and continued firing at the officers,” Dobbs said. “The officers returned fire, striking the suspect.”

Seven of the federal officers engaged in the shootout, Dobbs said. None were injured by the gunfire.

The suspect died at the scene despite the life-saving medical efforts of Customs and Border Protection Officers and San Diego firefighters and medics, Dobbs said.

According to an incident report obtained Tuesday by AJC.com, the guard was sitting at the security desk inside the Parker H. Petit Science Center when a .45-caliber double-barreled pistol in his backpack discharged. The gun was the guard’s personal weapon, university police Chief Joseph Spillane said. Guards are unarmed.

When police got to the scene in the 100 block of Piedmont Avenue just after 10:30 p.m. Sunday, the injured guard was holding his right thigh and pacing the floor, according to the report.

“I then instructed the male to lay on the floor so I could assess the injuries,” the officer said in the report. “Once on the ground I was able to locate what appeared to be two gunshot wounds to the upper right thigh.”

The officer removed the guard’s belt and and used it as a tourniquet to stop the bleeding until emergency personnel arrived.

“While waiting on EMS, the victim stated he had the firearm in his backpack because he felt unsafe riding the train to work,” the officer said in the report.
“Conspiracy theories are just spoiler alerts these days.”

Mother of 5 with license to carry shoots ex-boyfriend as he breaks into her house

Police said the ex-boyfriend kicked out the AC unit and tried to break through the front window.

Police said the woman who shot her ex-boyfriend had a protection order against him and had a license to carry. Her five kids were upstairs at the time, police said.

Police said the homeowner and the man she shot have a long, violent past.

The man was taken to the hospital by an ambulance.

Lt. Brent McCurley said the man was shot multiple times and had to go into surgery. He is in stable condition.

Man shot by homeowner during robbery should get reduced sentence, lawyer argues

A lawyer for Robert Collingwood, 26, a Hamilton, Ont., man accused of home-invasion style robberies, has asked the judge for a more lenient sentence because his client was shot during one of his crimes. Defence lawyer Ian Bingham told presiding Judge Fergus O’Donnell that a five-year sentence, rather than the seven-year sentence the Crown was pursuing, would be more appropriate. “My submission is being shot at point-blank range with a firearm serves to address the sentencing principles of denunciation and deterrence under the Criminal Code,” Bingham said to CTV News.ca in an email.
