Hecker had a gun, for which he has a concealed weapons permit, and exchanged shots with Medina, Watrel said. Hecker drove away and called 911, then returned to the scene, Watrel said. Medina was transported to Orlando Regional Medical Center in serious condition and later was pronounced dead.

    Shooting incidents in the news.

10 dead so far. One of the article states a shotgun and a .38... also multiple pipe bombs both on and off campus. But we all know initial reports are typically wrong.

“A gun is a tool, Marian; no better or no worse than any other tool: an axe, a shovel or anything. A gun is as good or as bad as the man using it. Remember that.” - Shane

Impossible. Pretty sure that select fire Kalashnikov rifles are banned in France.

Man gets lesser sentence in accidental shooting of girlfriend in Swanzey

In an arrest affidavit, Swanzey police Detective Mary Wilson wrote that when she later interviewed Brow he told her that he and his girlfriend Stephanie Teves had fallen asleep together around 11 p.m. and that he later awoke to a “noise he described as human footsteps.” “Brow stated that he immediately grabbed his firearm, which he keeps by the side of his bed, and as he turned and looked in the hallway all he could see was a black silhouette,” Wilson wrote. “Brown stated that he yelled “Hey” and didn’t believe he got the words out of his mouth as he fired his Glock 9mm twice in quick succession.” Brow then realized he had shot Teves and called 911. Wilson wrote that when she spoke to Teves at the hospital she said “she went to the bathroom and that as she got to the top of the stairs she heard Brown yell “Hey” and she was shot twice.” “Teves suffered from two gunshots, one bullet passed through the right forearm, and right abdomen, and lodged in her back. The second bullet passed through her left abdomen through her back.” Teves was taken first to Cheshire Medical Center in Keene, but was then transferred to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon where she had surgery for her injuries. “Teves’ injuries were life-threatening and she remains hospitalized,” Wilson wrote Tuesday. Two first-degree assault charges leveled against Brow were dropped by Cheshire County prosecutor Chris McLaughlin Thursday. Brow was scheduled to appear in the Cheshire County Superior Court Thursday afternoon to be arraigned on the charges, but instead filed pleas of not guilty on the remaining charges — two counts of second-degree assault and two counts of reckless conduct with a deadly weapon. Brow is currently out on $50,000 personal recognizance bail. However, according to court documents filed in the Cheshire County Superior Court Thursday, that bail is being converted to $5,000 cash bail at noon today. According to the new bail conditions, he can also be released to home confinement and electronic monitoring. Brow is also directed, by a domestic violence protection order on file at the court, to have no contact with Teves.

Matthew E. Brow, 26, of Winchendon, Mass., pleaded guilty to two felony counts of reckless conduct with a deadly weapon. The shooting occurred in the early-morning hours of Feb. 23 at the home of Teves, 27, on Cedar Road in Swanzey. Brow and Stephanie Teves had gone to sleep earlier that night. Brow told police he awoke, heard footsteps, saw someone he thought was an intruder, yelled and fired two shots from a 9 mm Glock handgun he kept by the side of the bed, according to an affidavit written by Swanzey police Detective Mary Wilson. He said he called 911 once he realized it was Teves. Teves was struck by two bullets — one in the right arm and the right side of her abdomen, the other in the left side of her abdomen, according to court documents. She was treated for life-threatening bullet wounds to the abdomen at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, Wilson wrote. Reading a statement in court Tuesday, Teves called Brow “kind and gentle” and said he poses no threat to society. Teves, who owns the Primal Fitness studio in Keene, said she still cannot drive or work. “Part of Matthew’s job is to take care of me,” she said. Branding him a felon, she said, “helps no one.” Cheshire County Attorney D. Chris McLaughlin acknowledged Teves’ statement but said Brow’s reckless discharge of a gun still constitutes a crime. Punishment in such circumstances, the judge continued, must balance fairness to the individual with sending “a message to society about how you handle guns.” Judge David W. Ruoff signed off on a plea deal that could allow Brow to stay out of jail and, if he complies with conditions of probation, have the two felony convictions downgraded to misdemeanors after two years. Under the agreement, Brow received two one-year jail sentences, with all but nine months of one sentence suspended. Brow is eligible to serve out the nine months on administrative home confinement, rather than in the Cheshire County jail. He cannot possess a firearm or other deadly weapon for five years.
