What are the safety protocols for shooting in the public land/ desert areas out west?
Same as everywhere else: be sure of your target and what is beyond it.

I primarily shoot on public lands in AZ, but not where everyone shoots Willy-nilly in any direction. I find places by myself or with small groups and we shoot at targets backed by berms. We do not shoot trash, and often spend more time cleaning up after smugglers and lazy recreational users than we do shooting.

I have never been to the area described in the article, but have been to a similar location in another state. Didn't take long to cure me of that.

Correct but I've never been to any place like that. So I didn't know if there were designated ranges or areas where you are not allowed to walk.

That's the problem with overly popular uncontrolled shooting areas like that: the lack of control. This lady was walking around in the impact area of a shooting area. Apparently, there is no telling which direction people are going to shoot there. The results are tragic, but not unpredictable.

Funeral for Pierce County deputy today. Video is pretty tough.

On Wednesday, more than 3,000 people packed into Olson Auditorium at Pacific Lutheran University to honor McCartney, who was shot and killed Jan. 8 after responding to a home invasion robbery near Frederickson.

These poor young people need to STOP trying to turn their lives around. It’s a God forsaken dangerous task. They be better off crabbing in Alaska.

Security guard shot colleague in Hollywood in fight over gate lock, police say

The two Regions Security guards were in the middle of a shift change on Dec. 3 at the plant, 3441 Hollywood Boulevard, Hollywood, Florida, when they apparently got into a tussle over how a gate was locked, a police report said. When police arrived, Wilner Duce, 49, was on the ground claiming “he shot me, he shot me” as Andres Aviles, 26, holstered his 9 mm Glock. Aviles put his hands in the air and told police: “He just accosted me, he was assaulting me … and it’s all on video.” Although there was closed-circuit TV, no footage could be accessed. Duce, who lay on the ground bleeding, was also armed. His 9 mm Taurus was snapped into a holster. The safety was on and there was no bullet in the chamber, the police report said. Aviles told police he drew his gun for protection after Duce punched the gate door and caused it to hit Aviles in the chest. Aviles said he followed Duce and while struggling to disarm him, the shot was fired, according to the report. Aviles was not immediately arrested. Sometime after giving a statement to police, he drove to Mexico. From there he flew to San Salvador, where he was detained while trying to travel on to Nicaragua, Miranda Grossman, a spokeswoman for the Hollywood Police Department said.
