The suspect, a 71-year-old man armed with a concealed handgun, has not yet been publicly identified. He has not been charged.
Walter Rainey, 84, of Irondale, and Sarah Yeager, 75, of Pelham were killed in the shooting. Rainey died at the scene; Yeager died at UAB Hospital.
A female, 84, of Hoover, is still being treated at UAB Hospital.
The incident happened during a “Boomers Potluck” dinner that started at 5 p.m. at the church.
“The suspect acted alone, there is no threat to the community,” a police statement read.
A man calling himself “Mr. Smith” was sitting alone and a longtime church member approached him and invited him to sit at a table, said the Rev. Doug Carpenter, who founded the church in 1973 and retired in 2005.
“Mr. Smith” refused to join them and later pulled out a handgun and shot three people, Carpenter said.
Jim Musgrove, a church member, hit the shooter with a chair and wrestled the gun away from him, Carpenter said.
There were about 25 people at the Boomers’ Potluck dinner, Carpenter said.
No one at the dinner knew “Mr. Smith,” who claimed he was a former member. “We’re trying to figure out who he is,” Carpenter said.
Good fighting spirit from the Alabama church shooting:
:
"He hit him with a folding chair, wrestling him to the ground, took the gun from him and hit him in the head with his own gun," the church's retired pastor, Rev. Doug Carpenter, reportedly described.
The parishioner was then able to disarm Smith, leaving him largely unharmed but with a large bruise and a bloodshot eye, according to the mugshot released by the Jefferson County Jail in Birmingham."
. . .
"The person that subdued the suspect, in my opinion, was a hero," police Capt. Shane Ware said during a news conference Friday, saying that act was "extremely critical in saving lives."

Good reminder that a news story and even a crime victim might not be being 100% truthful.

Authorities are asking for the public’s help in identifying the suspect in a robbery and shooting on the city’s eastside.
Brian Plott, the 47-year-old victim, was shot midday Sunday, June 12, in the 7000 block of First Ave. South. He said he was left for dead, heckled and refused help by multiple passers-by.
The victim has his realtor’s license and he flips and manages multiple properties in Birmingham. He and an investor recently bought a home on 66th Street South to renovate and, on that Sunday, he was checking out a similar property nearby that someone else had already renovated.
Plott said he was looking at the renovated home to see if the HVAC system had been replaced and glanced into the detached garage.
He said when he turned around, the suspect was pointing a gun at him
As I turned back around, there’s a gun being shoved in my face,’’ Plott said. “It was quick enough that I lunged a little bit and reached for my pistol, but he had full intentions to shoot me and then rob me, not ask me for any items.”
Plott said he pushed the gun away and the bullet hit him in his right femur, close to the groin area.https://www.al.com/news/birmingham/2...developer.htmlVideo released in search for 2 witnesses in robbery and shooting of Birmingham real estate developer
