Word around the campfire is that the deceased 70 year-old man was gunsmith Rodger Kotanko, proprietor of RK Custom Gunsmithing.
Some officers were wearing plain clothes while others wore tactical gear, according to family, friends, neighbours and Michael Smitiuch, the family's lawyer, all of whom CBC spoke with this week. They say Toronto police brought their own ambulance and paramedics with them when they first arrived, a move Toronto defence lawyer Kim Schofield, who has worked on numerous cases involving the SIU, said was "very unusual." Smitiuch said the SIU and Toronto police have kept the family "in the dark." The family and Smitiuch have no copy of the search warrant police used and don't have enough information to get a copy. He added he has not heard from Toronto police or SIU. Schofield said officers are also usually required to give the family a copy of the search warrant. "This is craziness," she said upon hearing about the case.

Pregnant Florida librarian killed in road rage shooting she allegedly started: police
Sara Nicole Morales was shot outside her home by motorcyclist she had hit

A pregnant Florida woman is dead after allegedly initiating a road rage incident with a motorcyclist in Orange City on Saturday, police say.

Sara Nicole Morales, 35, hit Andrew Derr's motorcycle intentionally with her blue Kia along the 1400 block of N. Volusia Ave around 5 p.m., according to investigators. Derr was not injured in the minor accident, and he and witnesses followed Morales while she drove away from the scene.

The motorcyclist and witnesses contacted law enforcement while following her to her home and also attempted to get her to stop, but she refused.

When Morales reached home, she went inside and reportedly retrieved a firearm. She confronted Derr and the witnesses in the street while they were on the phone with 911, according to the police.

Derr, who has a valid Florida concealed weapons permit, drew his firearm and fired multiple rounds, striking Morales.

Orange City Fire Rescue responded to provide medical care at the scene before Morales was transported to Halifax Health Medical Center, where she died, FOX 35 Orlando reported.

Morales’ handgun was recovered on the scene by officers. She was reportedly four to five months pregnant and leaves behind an 11-year-old daughter and a fiancé. She was a librarian at the Pierson Public Library.

Derr remained on scene and has been cooperating with law enforcement.

After nearly 20 years in Miami, I'd have to call bullshit on that. (Let alone 35 years in NYC.)

Ex-Kansas officer who sued sheriff's deputy is killed after grabbing cop's gun In a lawsuit, former Det. Lionel Womack alleged dashcam video showed a deputy intentionally ran him over

KANSAS CITY, Kan. — A former Kansas police detective, who last year sued a sheriff's deputy for running over him in a rural field, has been fatally shot by a police officer in Kansas City after disarming an officer and pointing a gun at another, police said Tuesday.

Lionel Womack was killed during the encounter Monday after police received 911 calls about a man standing in a road pointing at the sky and trying to jump in front of traffic.

“Those officers had no choice — this whole incident took place in 26 seconds," Police Chief Karl Oakman said at a news conference.

When officers arrived, Womack started running toward them in “an aggressive manner," Oakman said, adding that the entire encounter was captured on police body camera and dashcam video.

Womack attempted to get into the passenger side of the police car then ran around the vehicle where he came into contact with an officer. Womack reached toward the back of his pants and the officer — assuming he had a gun — drew his weapon, Oakman said. Womack then got into the driver's seat of the patrol car, and the same officer tried to get him out.

A fight ensued over the officer's weapon, which discharged two shots. Womack successfully disarmed the officer and pointed the weapon at that officer before then pointing it at the other officer, who shot and killed Womack. In the video, one officer can be heard saying to the other, “Man, you just saved my life,” the police chief said.[KANSAS CITY, Kan. — A former Kansas police detective, who last year sued a sheriff's deputy for running over him in a rural field, has been fatally shot by a police officer in Kansas City after disarming an officer and pointing a gun at another, police said Tuesday.

Verdict in the Ahmaud Aubery case

Just saw the verdict in the Ahmaud Aubery case. Can some of you legal guys explain why there were multiple murder charges? One count of Malice murder, but several counts of Felony murder.
I haven't followed this case like I did Rittenhouse, but from what I've seen, it seems like a good verdict. I just don't understand how you get multiple counts on one killing.

Two weeks after gunsmith's death, SIU has not interviewed officer who fired gun

Special Investigations Unit (SIU) spokesperson Kristy Denette told CBC Hamilton on Friday the unit hasn't made an official request to interview the officer who fired his gun and review his notes but is "in the process" of doing so. Denette said the SIU has interviewed five of seven witness police officers and two civilian witnesses. But unlike the witness officers, the male officer who pulled the trigger can choose to skip the interview and not surrender his notes. Denette said since the officer is the focus of the investigation, he "is granted the same rights as any citizen under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms to protect himself ... from self-incrimination."
