Here is a bad one--Homeowner was awakened about 5 a.m. by noise outside and looked out the window and saw someone trying to break into his storage shed with a pickax .
He grabbed his handgun and chambered a round, exited his home yelling at the person to stop what he was doing and not come any closer or else he'd shoot.
Instead, he told police, the person took several steps toward him, so he fired his gun, according to the affidavit.
At that point, the burglar dropped the pickax and ran toward the park.
The homeowner said he fired an additional shot "into the night" in the direction of the park, even though from his description, the threat of serious bodily injury against him was over when the complainant dropped the pickax and ran off.
The homeowner wasn't sure whether he had struck the person, so he just went back to bed.
As the sun began to rise, Meyer again looked outside and saw "a black bag" in the park near his house. Upon closer inspection, he found the individual lying face down in the park.
The homeowner's wife called an attorney for advice before the homeowner called 911.
When police arrived and crime scene investigators couldn't find any spent shell casings, the homeowner told them he had thrown them in the trash.
(Ed L editorial hints: bad things often happen when you leave the safety of your locked house to confront someone who is otherwise not a threat to human life, fire shots at someone who is running away, not bother to call the police immediately, and then throw away the shell casings).

Officer Brian Mulkeen, 33, was fatally shot three times in the head, chest, and legs with his own weapon while he wrestled with the suspect on the ground in the Bronx, the New York Post reported. Mulkeen, a six-year veteran of the NYPD, was then taken to a local hospital where doctors tried to save his life. But Mulkeen did not survive and died from his wounds. The suspect was also fatally shot, with five other members of the NYPD firing their “service weapons” to strike the man, Chief of Department Terence Monahan told reporters. The 27-year-old gunman— who had been on probation for a 2018 narcotics arrest and had a burglary conviction from Rockland County— was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police Commissioner James O'Neill said Officer Brian Mulkeen, 33, was shot twice by police gunfire during the Sunday confrontation in the Bronx. “Mulkeen retained his firearm during the entire violent struggle he had with this suspect,” said O’Neill. “He fired five rounds at the suspect.”

ELLSWORTH — A referee at the Maine Maritime Academy homecoming football game was injured by debris from a cannon that an alumnus brought to the game Saturday, the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office reported. “It is tradition upon scoring that MMA would shoot off a cannon using a blank shotgun shell,” said Deputy Dakota Dupuis. “Upon igniting the cannon, a referee on the football field was struck in the head by the wad, causing injury.” The referee was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. “The investigation continues and will be forwarded to the District Attorney’s Office pending potential criminal charges,” Dupuis said.

Another in the list of folks trying to scare someone and getting shot. Seems not to be that rare.
