Hundreds protest after North Carolina police shooting

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — A police shooting that wounded a suspect during a foot chase in Raleigh, North Carolina, sparked protests early Wednesday from hundreds who demanded answers and burned a flag outside the governor’s mansion.

Police Chief Cassandra Deck-Brown said officers responded to a 911 call Tuesday evening reporting a man with a gun near a shopping center in eastern Raleigh. She said arriving officers spotted a person matching the caller’s description, later identified as 26-year-old Javier Torres.

Torres ran and was chased by officers who repeatedly ordered him to stop and drop the gun, Deck-Brown said. Torres was shot in the abdomen by an officer who had joined the chase, the chief said, adding that the suspect was running directly toward that officer and would not drop his gun.
The extent of Torres’ injuries was not immediately known.

Wake County District Attorney Lorrin Freeman said in an email Wednesday that Torres remained in hospital care but could not elaborate on his condition.

A handgun, as described by the 911 caller, was located at the scene of the shooting, police said. No officers were injured.

Deck-Brown said the officer who fired the shot was wearing a body camera, as were others at the scene. At her direction, the department asked a judge to release the footage, and the judge approved their request. Police spokespeople did not immediately respond to an email asking how the video would be released.
There's nothing civil about this war.

Not technically a shooting, I suppose, as much as an unlawful discharge of firearm, reckless endangerment, etc. etc...but anyhoo, a timely COVID tie-in...

Made Newsweek though the headline is misleading

MAN ALLEGEDLY OPENS FIRE AFTER BEING CONFRONTED FOR COUGHING WITHOUT COVERING HIS MOUTH AMID COVID-19 PANDEMIC

One man coughs without covering his mouth. Another man calls him out for the cough. Word as are exchanged and then the stupid spins out of control on both sides. After arguing, confronter gets in his car and bumps cougher with his car. Cougher then draws his gun and starts shooting into confronters car. Both are charged with reckless endangerment. The headline is misleading in that it sounds like the cough lead to gunfire, but it was the car bump that got the gun out.

It’s in a sketchy part of an overall sketchy town so I was only mildly surprised at the whole thing.

I expect it's just the beginning of "stupid season". It will invariably get worse. Maybe we should make the dullards wear blaze orange.

Interesting one out of VA that made Tucker Carlson:

    https://video.foxnews.com/v/61461695...#sp=show-clips

In brief: Smoke Shop employee sleeping in shop wakes at 4am to sound of three masked individuals smashing front window and burglarizing store. Employee grabs pistol and opens fire, seriously injuring one while two flee, at which he reportedly continues to fire.

Employee is the only one presently in jail awaiting arraignment.

There's a few more moving parts to this mess; here's an early write-up: https://www.arlnow.com/2020/03/29/po...ould-be-thief/

Police officer shoots fellow NRP cop during argument

A Niagara Regional Police officer is in critical condition after being shot Thursday by a fellow officer during an altercation between the two men in rural Pelham, says provincial Special Investigations Unit spokeswoman Monica Hudon. Hudon made her remarks shortly after 6 p.m. at a news conference on Roland Road just west of Effingham Street. She said officers were in the area conducting a follow-up investigation of a Nov. 12 impaired driving collision in the area of Sulphur Spring Drive and Roland Road. She couldn't confirm the number of times the officer, identified by multiple police sources as Const. Nathan Parker, was shot. But those sources told The Standard Parker was hit at least five times. The other officer involved in the incident has been identified by multiple police sources as Det. Sgt. Shane Donovan of the traffic collision reconstruction unit. Niagara Emergency Medical Services paramedics treated Parker at the scene and transported him to an area hospital. Parker was later transferred by Orgne air ambulance to Hamilton General Hospital where he was listed in critical condition. The nature of the altercation between the officers has not been disclosed.
