From the newer article: "Troopers said Bowlin was released and no charges have been filed, but there is still an active criminal investigation underway to determine if the death was a homicide or self-defense."

Umm, it was definitely a homicide. The question is whether it was justifiable.

Vermont cops shot man pointing gun at his own head, police say

Benjamin Gregware, 42, of Sheldon, did not point his weapon at police before he was shot three times, Vermont State Police Col. Matthew Birmingham said. Less than an hour before the Bolton shooting, Gregware’s wife called police to say her husband was distraught and had purchased ammunition. A different trooper spoke to Gregware, who said he was going to continue driving south until he ran out of gas and then “end it.” When Gregware’s car was spotted, State police Trooper Christopher Brown and Richmond Cpl. Richard Greenough stopped the vehicle. Gregware got out of his car and walked toward the officers, ignoring repeated demands that he drop the weapon, a machine pistol commonly known as a Mac-10. Trooper Brown and Cpl. Greenough fired 12 shots total at him. Gregware did not fire at the officers. The investigation is trying to determine if Gregware’s weapon went off as he fell to the ground. It was the third fatal shooting involving Brown in the last six months. He also was involved in a nonfatal shooting several years ago, Birmingham said. Brown has been placed on administrative leave for the duration of the investigation into the latest shooting, a process that could take several months. Greenough has also been placed on leave, said Richmond Police Chief Alan Buck. “This decision is not an indication of any wrongdoing by Trooper Brown, but merely a change in the way the state police will now manage our response to officer involved shootings as it relates to the health and well-being of our members,” Birmingham said during a Monday news conference.

^^^Considering there are only seven people in all of Vermont, Trooper Brown appears to have had inordinately bad luck.
There's nothing civil about this war.

The extremely unlikely defence that secured Gerald Stanley’s acquittal

...he was using ammunition that was particularly prone to hangfires. The Tokarev was loaded with 64-year-old cartridges originally manufactured in communist Czechoslovakia — and stored in an uninsulated shed subject to the extremes of the Saskatchewan climate. “Hangfires are most common among old military surplus ammunition such as that used in this case,” Tom Givens, co-founder of Tennessee’s Rangemaster Firearms Training Services, told the Post.

Man shot and killed in south-side home invasion

SAN ANTONIO - Police are looking for two men who they claim killed a man during a home invasion on the south side.
One of the men living in the home, Oscar Carrizales, told police he was ordered to the ground when one of the suspects pointed a gun at him. He said he feared for his life, so he complied.

As the suspects were leaving, the other man living in the home chased after them and started shooting.

One of the suspects fired back, hitting that man in the chest. He died at the scene, and his identity has not been released.

One of the suspects, later identified as 32-year-old Eddie Padilla, was shot in the neck and taken to the San Antonio Military Medical Center in critical condition. Police said Padilla condition later "stabilized," and he will be held on $100,000 bond.
