You have better odds of winning the powerball than to end up in any situation remotely like that one.

With 2 shots from her pistol, and prayer, 79-year-old woman holds off burglar

"Okay...come on. I got something for you," she yelled at the intruder before firing off one shot.

For nearly 10 minutes, the woman and her pistol took control of the home invasion while she gave the 911 dispatcher a play-by-play of the 20-year-old man who she said was making a racket ransacking another part of the house.

This one is relatively local to @willie, and he told me about it. A police was car shot multiple times with buckshot after a bank robbery in Waco, TX area. Officer Brandon was hit in the arm and has been released from the hostpital. LINK

EDIT: "Bohanan was 18 to 20 feet away from Brandon’s patrol car when [he] exited his pickup and the shooting started. As the shots rang out, Brandon threw his car into reverse and tried to put more distance between himself and the shooter, Devlin said."

That's pretty much any defensive firearm use.
As to the outliers, those are the ones you should put at least a little thought into because they are so far outside the norm that they are the ones most likely to cause your brain to lock down.
Every idiot has a good idea how to handle a super simple problem.
The more stimulus you have to deal with the harder it gets to be a successful idiot.
Wargaming a complex dynamic scenario isn't done to solve that specific scenario, it's to get you accustomed to quickly working through a complex problem so the easy shit is even easier and the hard shit is manageable.

To add to your comment. I used to use vignettes with my squad and later my platoon talking through scenarios of things that might happen or I've seen happen during deployments during train up and while deployed and out on patrol. Even though things didn't always go down the way we talked about them my guys reacted significantly faster than most everyone else we worked with. I noticed it particularly when working with other platoons, slice elements and other units when in contact. Having a plan even if it's not quite right is better than no plan and rolling though possibilities prior thinking about how things can happen and how you need to react absolutely does help you reduce reaction time and keep from shutting down or freezing up while trying to figure the appropriate response. Visualization is a powerful tool. I'd say your line of thinking is spot on.

Utah man shoots, kills Idaho officer who confronted him in his home, police say

The headline is misleading as it incorrectly implies the suspended ID Officer was acting in some official capacity. A more accurate headline would be “Utah man defends himself against home invasion by girlfriends abusive ex.”

Police Officer's Rifle Accidentally Discharges in Casino

On the night of April 19, 2018 a Suquamish Tribal Police officer and a Kitsap County sheriff's deputy were at the Clearwater Casino in North Kitsap in response to reports of a fight between casino guests. At about 8:40 pm a Bainbridge Island police officer received a call for emergency backup of the two officers. The emergency had been phoned in by a bystander — not by either of the officers. The caller reported that officers were trying to take someone into custody but the person was resisting. Complicating the response, local law enforcement radios have poor reception inside that particular casino, and no one was able to contact the supposedly-in-danger officers before responding. The assigned Bainbridge Island officer rushed to the casino, parked, grabbed his rifle and hurried in. Seconds later the officer's rifle discharged a round into the floor. His hand was not near the trigger. The weapon has since been tested by the Washington State Patrol crime lab, but results were inconclusive. Regardless, the Bainbridge Island Police Department decided to retire the weapon. The officer whose weapon discharged was not disciplined. This casino surveillance video shows the incident.
