Indiana Man Charged With Illegally Buying Gun Used to Kill Police Officer Ella French

An Indiana man has been arrested and charged with illegally purchasing the firearm that was used to kill Chicago police Officer Ella French on Saturday night.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Jamel Danzy, 29, of Hammond, Indiana, has been charged with conspiracy to violate federal firearm laws, including knowingly transferring and giving a firearm to an out-of-state resident, knowingly making a false written statement to acquire a firearm and knowingly disposing of a firearm to a convicted felon.

Danzy made an initial court appearance Monday and was ordered to remain in federal custody until a detention hearing Wednesday.

French was fatally shot at approximately 9:08 p.m. Saturday, when she and two other officers with the CPD’s Community Safety Team conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle with three occupants at 63rd Street and South Bell Avenue.

As they approached, the officers were fired upon by a male passenger in the vehicle and returned fire, according to police Superintendent David Brown. French, who had been an officer since April 2018, was struck and killed. A male officer was also shot and remains in critical condition, according to police.

One person inside the vehicle was also shot and transported to the hospital. Another of the occupants was arrested at the scene, while the third was taken into custody as of Sunday morning. Criminal charges against the three are expected to be announced Monday afternoon.

A weapon was recovered at the scene, according to Brown, who said it appeared only one of the three occupants of the vehicle fired at police.

According to a federal complaint, one of the men arrested in French’s killing had in his possession a Glock .22 caliber semi-automatic pistol, which federal investigators believe was the weapon used in the shooting.

Those investigators later discovered both the firearm and the vehicle that was pulled over during the traffic stop are registered to Danzy.

According to a federal complaint, Danzy was arrested Sunday and initially told investigators he had legally bought the gun for himself in Hammond in March 2021. But he allegedly later admitted that he had, in fact, purchased the gun for a friend of his in Chicago who was unable to buy a firearm himself due to a past felony conviction for theft in Wisconsin.

“Tragedies like this happen when people straw purchase firearms on behalf of those who are prohibited from purchasing and possessing firearms themselves,” Kristen de Tineo, special agent-in-charge of the Chicago Field Division of the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, said in a statement. “ATF remains committed to working with our law enforcement partners and the U.S. Attorney’s Office to investigate these firearms trafficking schemes and prosecute those responsible.”

If convicted, Danzy faces up to five years in prison.

‘I just shot him in the chest’

911 Caller: “Um, this man. They’re landscapers. He was arguing with a bunch of landscapers and I was cleaning up my tools, because I finished laying tile. I’m getting ready to start grouting, so I was walking to my truck. I was not too far from them and he was ‘Habla, habla, hable’ and I don’t understand …
911 Caller: “He started coming close and doing his fist, so I pulled out my pistol. And so I told him, ‘Hey, hey, hey. No habla espanol, no habla espanol. Leave me alone, leave me alone. I don’t want no trouble…”
911 Caller: “He’s a big dude. He’s a lot bigger than I am and I just thought, here comes my head fixing to be pummeled into the concrete…”
“So when he came close, I had no choice. Already, I called the cops first.”

The man stayed on the phone as law enforcement arrived on scene.

Dispatch: “I need you to secure your weapon somewhere.”
911 Caller: “My weapon is secured on my side.”

Florida deputy loses two fingers after suspect’s homemade firearm explodes

A sheriff’s deputy in Florida investigating a domestic disturbance was seriously injured when a homemade firearm exploded as a suspect allegedly fired at him.

Polk County Sheriff’s Deputy Eric Lawes, 33, lost two fingers after being struck by a 12-gauge shotgun shell fired from a pipe gun allegedly in the possession of suspect Marco Antonio Tolentino, 39.

The bullet from the makeshift firearm, known as a zip gun, also struck Mr Tolentino’s shoulder and arm, and he was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Both men are in a stable condition, the Polk County Sheriff’s Office said.

The incident occurred as Mr Lawes and another deputy responded to a domestic incident at the Economy Motor Lodge in the town of Dundee, central Florida, at 9.30pm on Sunday night.

The deputies were directed to a woman who was sitting outside a neighboring motel.

Soon after they arrived, Mr Tolentino, who was not involved in the disturbance, approached the scene on bicycle.

Mr Lawes reportedly asked him to produce identification and if he had anything illegal in his possession.

Mr Tolentino lifted his shirt to show the metal pipe gun, saying he had it for his protection.

“A portion of ‘the pipe’ was concealed in the suspect’s right pocket and also extended upwards to the abdomen underneath the shirt,” Polk County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.

“The deputy reached for the item, at which time the suspect also again reached for the item, and also was trying to pull away from him. At that time, the pipe... came apart as it was pulled from the pocket and then a ‘blast’ went off.”

Another deputy at the scene provided emergency first aid to Mr Lawes.

Mr Tolentino has been charged with attempted felony murder, possessing or discharging a destructive device, resisting an officer with violence, carrying a concealed weapon and providing false information to a law enforcement officer.

The sheriff’s office explained that the “zip gun” had two inter-locking pieces of metal pipe that hold a single shotgun shell.

“When pressed together, the device is designed to fire the single projectile.”

During a search of Mr Tolentino’s room, additional shotgun rounds were found.

RCMP say man shot dead during Red Deer County break-in had previously shown up twice

Police said that during the confrontation, the man who had apparently broken in struck the homeowner multiple times with a baseball bat before the homeowner shot the intruder once, killing him. The homeowner was taken to hospital, where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries. Police said he won't be charged. "Apparently, some meth addict did three home invasions, beat people in a family with a bat, came back repeatedly, and this guy kept getting put back out on the street. And ultimately, it led to the dad having to defend his family, sadly, with a lethal effect," Alberta Premier Jason Kenney said Friday.
