David Dorn shooting: Arrest, murder charge announced

A man has been arrested and faces charges including murder in last week's shooting death of retired St. Louis police Capt. David Dorn amid riots and looting there, officials announced Sunday. Dorn, a retired police captain, was shot and killed in the early morning hours of June 2 while trying to protect his friend’s pawn shop during a night of violent protests sparked by the death of George Floyd, his widow said. He was killed by people who had broken into Lee's Pawn & Jewelry, and his body was found on the sidewalk at about 2:30 a.m., investigators said. Dorn served nearly 40 years on the St. Louis police force before he retired in October 2007. He then became chief of Moline Acres, a small town in St. Louis County. The suspect, Stephan Cannon, 24, was charged with first-degree murder, first-degree robbery, first-degree burglary, felon in possession of a firearm and three counts of armed criminal action, Gardner said.

2 Alberta RCMP officers charged with criminal negligence in fatal 2018 shooting

Cpl. Randy Stenger and Const. Jessica Brown were arrested Friday and each charged with one count of criminal negligence causing death in relation to the fatal shooting of Clayton Crawford, said Susan Hughson, executive director of the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT). The charges mark the first time in ASIRT's 11-year history that officers have been charged with criminal offences in a shooting that resulted in a death, Hughson told a news conference in Edmonton on Monday. ASIRT was directed to investigate the shooting on the day that it happened. Hughson said she reviewed the findings of ASIRT's investigation and determined that the evidence could provide reasonable grounds to believe that a criminal offence or offences had been committed. The completed investigation was forwarded to the Alberta Crown Prosecution Service in August 2019 for an opinion on whether the case met its standard for prosecution. On May 29, ASIRT received the completed final opinion. Hughson concluded that the two RCMP officers who discharged their firearms should be charged. Stenger and Brown have both been suspended with pay, said RCMP Deputy Commissioner Curtis Zablocki. "There is a great responsibility placed in the hands of police officers," Zablocki said. "They are called upon to make split-second decisions that can have lasting impacts in often rapidly changing and dynamic situations. Those decisions unfortunately can sometimes result in a tragic loss of life." He said Stenger and Brown were immediately removed from duty after the shooting but returned to work after going through "a number of steps" allowing them to return to active duty during a pending ASIRT investigation. Zablocki said the RCMP has "immense respect for the investigations undertaken by ASIRT and the accountability that the process brings to policing. It ensures public trust and confidence remains for policing across Alberta's communities." Hughson said she expects a fatality inquiry will follow the completion of the criminal prosecution against the RCMP officers. Both officers were released on an undertaking with conditions including a prohibition on possessing firearms. They will appear July 14 in provincial court in Whitecourt.

Nobody was hit by gunfire during the chaotic scene that unfolded when the cops spotted the male suspect shooting another man about 5:40 p.m. at the intersection of Dix Avenue and Beach Channel Drive in Far Rockaway, according to law enforcement sources. The man being shot at then ran towards the officers’ patrol car before the suspect fired several rounds at the vehicle, breaking a window, according to sources. One cop returned fire and the suspect fled, sources said. Hours later, the man was still on the lam. One officer was hospitalized for a cut to his hand, while the other was being treated for tinnitus. It wasn’t immediately clear what led to the initial shooting.

Officer who fatally shot D'Andre Campbell not providing interview, notes to S.I.U.

The police officer who fatally shot a young Black man with schizophrenia at his family's Brampton, Ont., home in April has not agreed to an interview, nor turned over his notes to investigators, Ontario's police watchdog says. The Special Investigations Unit, a civilian oversight body that investigates reports of deaths, serious injury or sexual assaults involving police, said in a news release Thursday that the officer involved in the shooting of D'Andre Campbell, whom it did not identify, "cannot be legally compelled to present themselves for an interview to the SIU," nor must they submit their notes. Campbell, 26, was shot dead on April 6 after calling Peel Regional Police himself for help, his family recently told CBC News. "There was an interaction which included the discharge of conducted energy [Taser or Taser-like] weapons by two officers," according to an SIU news release in the hours after Campbell's death. "One officer then discharged his firearm multiple times. The man was struck. He succumbed to his injuries at the scene." From the scene, investigators recovered a knife, two conducted energy weapons and what they described as "firearm-related evidence." The officer's firearm was also taken as part of the investigation. "Many of these items" were submitted for forensic analysis, the SIU said. "They shouldn't be going to our house with guns," Campbell's father, Claudius, told The Fifth Estate. "For what? They're gonna fight a war? Why are they bringing guns to deal with a mental issue?

(CNN)An Atlanta police officer shot and killed a man at a Wendy's drive-thru Friday night after he resisted arrest and struggled for an officer's Taser, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said in a statement.

The GBI identified the slain man as Rayshard Brooks, 27, of Atlanta, who was African American.
Witnesses provided video to investigators, the GBI said on Twitter.

"The GBI is aware that there is video posted on social media captured by witnesses in this incident. We are reviewing the video & the early investigative information in this case. We'll provide an update as soon as we can," the tweet said.

Friday, officers responded to a call at 10:33 p.m. about a man sleeping in a parked vehicle in the drive-thru, causing other customers to drive around it, the GBI said in a statement.
Police gave Brooks a field sobriety test, which he failed, the GBI said. He resisted arrest and struggled with officers, the GBI said.

An officer drew his Taser and, witnesses said, the man grabbed it, the statement said. An officer then shot him.
Brooks was taken to a hospital, where he died, the statement said.
One officer was treated for an injury and released, the GBI said.
CNN has reached out to the APD, GBI and the mayor's office but they have not responded.

8 people shot outside San Antonio bar

A group of five people, two males and three females, were denied entry into a San Antonio bar because they were too inebriated. That’s when the alleged shooter said, “don’t you know who I am? I’m a UFC fighter from California.” After being denied entry, the suspect then, according to San Antonio Police Chief William McManus, “walked back to his car, pulled out a long rifle and walked back across the street and opened fire.” The victims were five men and three woman between the ages of 23 and 41, McManus said. Two were grazed by bullets and refused treatment. The other six went to the hospital and were in stable condition. Police said the shooter fled the scene and is still at-large.
