    Week 290: Reality Test

    Week 290: Reality Test

Results may be posted until November 12th, 2018.

    Designed by: nwhpfan
    Range: 7 yards
    Target: USPSA or IDPA
Start position: Holstered, hands at sides
    Rounds fired: 21

The Reality Test, a drill composite from nwhpfan is a combined battery of benchmark tests to measure your skills.

String 1: Bill Drill – draw and shoot 6 to the body.
String 2: Mozambique – draw and shoot 2 to the body and 1 to the head.
String 3: FAST (modified) – draw and shoot 2 to the head, perform a slidelock reload, and shoot 4 to the body.
String 4: Two Offhand - strong hand only draw, transfer to support hand, shoot 2 to the body support hand only.
String 5: Four Aces – draw and shoot 2 to the body, reload (any type of reload is allowed), and shoot another 2 to the body.

Note: In nwhpfan’s Reality Test, the entire head box (A/B zone) is the no-penalty scoring zone for head shots (including on the FAST.)

Scoring: Your score is your time for all five strings combined, plus penalties for hits outside the A/B/-0 zone. A/B/-0 zone hits are no penalty (this includes entire head.) C/-1 zone hits are +.25 seconds each. D/-3 zone hits are +1 second each. Each draw and reload performed from either concealment or LE duty gear receives a -.25 scoring bonus/subtraction.

Goal structure suggested, to approximate GM performance:
    Bill Drill – 1.9 seconds
    Mozambique – 1.5 seconds
    FAST – 4 seconds
    Two Offhand – 2 seconds
    Four Aces – 2.6 seconds

That’s a combined total of 12 seconds. nwhpfan’s goal is roughly 90% of that score, so 13.25 seconds including penalties.

See nwhpfan explain the test and shoot a great run!

Please report the following when you post your results in this thread:

Pistol, holster, and concealment (optional) used
Time for each of the five strings
    Total raw time
    Penalties added
    Final score

I totally came apart on the bill drill and it skewed the entire rest of the test. I completely lost the sights and had a nasty trigger freeze on the last shot which ,when I broke after a .5x split, ended up being a mike. I wasn't even sure how to score it so I added 2 seconds though it's an obvious dq. A ridiculous mistake that should be beneath me at this point but the proof is in the shooting and I fell short on this string.

The Mozambique was average if not a little sloppy for me. Probably some mental stuff from the previous string hanging around.

I liked the pseudo-fast string the best. It was very fun and if not for a .5x final split on the final body split I would've been sub 5. The reload was a bit wonky as well but nothing heart breaking considering the lack of time spent on them in dry practice over the last few months.

2 off hand was my poorest string that wasn't just poor mechanics. The weak hand transfer is just something I don't ever do so it was slow and ate most of my time though 2 alpha helped cut some time since it didn't eat my concealment bonus.

The 4 Aces was a blast and the reload was a 1.9x which is at the better end of what I have been able to do lately from concealment and the c was as close to an a as i could get without breaking the line. I'll take it.

Overall I really enjoyed this set of drills and am definitely going to run it regularly as I think it captures the core skills similar to the Gabe White standards but with some reloads added in, which is fun. Solid dotw. Would do again.

Pistol, holster, and concealment (optional) used
    CZ P-07, CGW Pro-Upgrade + Polish, 15# Hammer Spring, 7# DA, 3#DA, from JMCK 2.5 AIWB, concealed under T-shirt.
    USPSA Metric Target

Time for each of the five strings
    Bill Drill 2.63s (trigger freeze)
    FTS: 1.87s
    F.A.S.T. Variant: 4.17s
    2 Offhand: 2.58s
    4 Aces: 3.65s

    Total raw time: 14.9s

Penalties added: None, shot it clean.
    Subtractions for Concealment: 0.25s * 5 draws + 0.25s * 2 reloads = 1.75s

    Final score: 14.9s - 1.75s = 13.15s

    Anything you noticed
Shooting for entire head zone is relatively easy compared to the USPSA "A" zone or 3x5 card.
I had never done the transfer to weak hand with the P-07 from concealment - seemed slow and awkward.
It helps a lot when you crush the F.A.S.T. variant drill and don't eat any penalties!

    >> That’s a combined total of 12 seconds. nwhpfan’s goal is roughly 90% of that score, so 13.25 seconds including penalties.

I made NWHP's goal and am very pleased with myself. I'll shoot this more in the future - not sure how consistent I would be.

Ran this again today with better results, though still had a major flaw during the pseudo-fast.

Rtf2 glock 17(stock trigger, straight 8's, gadget, magpul magwell) from a phlster classic under a fleece.
    CCC bmc
    Uspsa target
    slidelock reloads

Bill - 2.88 clean (2.63 after concealment bonus)
Moz - 2.13 clean (1.88 after concealment bonus)
    Pseudo-fast - 5.90 clean(5.4 after concealment bonus)
    2OH - 3.54 1c (3.54 after -.25 for the c and +.25 for concealment bonus)
    4 aces - 3.75 2c (3.75 after -.50 for 2c's and +.5 for concealment bonus)

Total time - 18.2 (17.2 corrected for concealment bonus and penalties)

I had a massive failure on the reload during the pseudo-fast resulting in a 3.2 second reload time...I failed to clear the cover garment and when I grabbed the mag out of the pouch it was surrounded by a handful of my fleece. I finished the reload but my time suffered greatly. I managed a 1.8x reload on the 4 aces so it could have easily been a sub 5 run had I not f'd up. After the test was complete I ran a few 1r2 drills working on clearing the garment but pushing raw speed to induce failures if I didn't do it all right and managed to get all the slidelock reloads done between 1.61 and 1.77. That is smoking for me but times were consistently there. The magpul magwell is something I would easily carry as it adds very little in the way of bulk and makes reloads effortless, as long as I clear my cover garment and index on the magazine properly that is.

Once again a fun test and one I will continue to run and push to see where I can get.

I can’t tell you how mny times I’ve come up with a reload mag wrapped in T-shirt, especilly the P-07 with the base bads that have a big “toe” sticking out.

Langdon LTT Elite, JMCK custom owb holster, Open front windstopper sweater for concealment, Ready Tactical mag pouch.

    Bill: 3.01 clean
Moz: 2.45 head hit was low on the body=miss
    FAST: 6.61 clean
    2 offhand: 3.04 -1
    4 Aces: 4.37 clean

    Raw time 19.48
    -1.75 for concealment
    17.73
plus 2.0 for the miss and .25 for the down 1.
    19.98 final score.

I shot this 2 more times.
    3.06 -1, 2.67, 5.91, 3.10 -2, 4.94 raw 19.68 + .75 and - 1.75 = 18.68 final
    2.86 -2, 2.95, 6.22, 2.73 -1, 4.56 -3 raw 19.32 + 1.50 and - 1.75 = 19.07 final.

Things I noticed. I guess this is my reality.

I have been shooting mostly Glocks for the last couple of decades. These scores are comparable to what I would shoot with my familiar Glocks. The LTT Elite is a fine shooting pistol. I had shot around 500 rounds through it when I first got it but nothing since. Yesterday I shot 50 rounds through it and decided to see how I would do with this DoTW. This pistol is so accurate it is amazing.

I really like this combination of drills.

Three consistent runs in a row is a good thing - you know where you are at and can quantify improvements as you put in the work to improve.

I ran a complex USPSA mini-stage last weekend 6-8 times, emphasizing different things (speed, hits) and all my Hit Factors were 4.8-5.0-5.2, with most hovering right around 5.0.

    Consistent results tell you things.

Shot this this afternoon with a G45, GLOCK night sights, out of a Tenicor OWB holster concealed under a windbreaker.
    Runs: 3.33, 2.86, 6.56, 3.51(-.5) 5.34. With subtracting for concealment: 20.35 seconds.
The lack of practice on reloads shows, although I can do better with this. May try it out of a duty rig.

Glock 17.5 Dawson Competition sights from open. AE 124

    Bill Drill 2.62 clean
    Moz 2.68 clean
    FAST 5.89 clean
    2 Off 4.57 clean
    4 Aces 3.83 +.25

    Total 19.84

First time running this and I really like it. Same issues with picking up the sights that I have on other tests. The Bold sights might be what I need to use going forward.

Also ran this with the 19x on 18 October but forgot the 2 shots offhand for some reason.

    Other times
    Bill 2.56 clean
    Moz 2.35
    FAST 5.49 (fumbled reload)
4 Aces 4.01 (magazine stuck a little at magwell. Got in too big of a hurry)

I really like the way the 19X handles. It has a little more muzzle flip than the 17 but it returns very predictably. I'm still not sure how much of it is the pistol and how much of it is the easier to see sights.

Also tried it with the Springer Operator from gamer rig for fun. 200 grain SWC reloads. Forgot the 2 offhand again. The single stack is a lot of work to shoot well but alos a lot of fun.

    Bill 2.66 clean
    Moz 2.45 clean
    FAST 5.57 +.25
    4 Aces 4.46 clean

    FAST - 4.52 2c +.25 = 4.77 (1.41 draw)
    Two offhand - 2.56 -.25 concealment = 2.31

Penalties added - mostly a wash with concealment, oddly with bonus from concealed reload end up -.25
    Final score - 15.60

Overall thought I did ok for myself. Need just a touch more visual patience - could easily clean up all those C's. Bill drill and four aces felt like I was slower than I shoulda been but don't shoot those too often. For my own interests I wrote down all my draws - all were 1.41 or better, which seems to be an improvement for me (good because I've been working them fairly hard in dry practice) and no fumble on draws which is very nice. Good mix up of drills.
The stupidity of some people never ceases to amaze me.

    Humbly improving with CZ's.
