I attended my first Revolver Roundup this past weekend.
I’ll leave it to someone else to cover the full event, though it was awesome.
The weekend included an ammo demonstration by Chuck Haggard of Agile Tactical.
The test used the standard ballistic gelatin, with most bullets fired through 4 layers of denim (leading to jokes about the possibility of “gun-shot” brand designer jeans.). All fired out of 2” barrels.
I snapped pics where I could of the top performers. Anyone who was there, feel free to correct me if I’m wrong.
All of these “best” loads had at least 12” penetration.
Buffalo Bore 110 +P Barnes Bullet
I didn’t get a picture of the bullet, but this Speer .357 round was pretty impressive:
Side note: the Speer 135 GD .38 Special plugged with denim and expanded little, if any. However, IIRC, it gave good penetration and 180-degree yaw.
Winchester 145 ST .357 fired out of a 4” Model 28.
Not pictured: Buffalo Bore .38 Special 158 LSWCHP +P. Good expansion, not as dramatic as their 110. Same bullet, standard pressure, not so much.
I’m not sure if this is the Winchester .357 ST again, or a Speer .44 Special 200-grain GDHP shot out of a 296. It is very impressive, though:
The Federal HST 9mm from a Glock 19 showed excellent expansion. Sorry, no bullet:
The Super Vel in the photo sucked. It fragmented after a few inches.
Full WCs penetrated about 12” and cut a predictable full caliber hole (I couldn’t get pics of the gelatin.)
All said & done, I’ll stick with full WCs or +P 158 LSWCHP for EDC.
I’ve not had good experiences with lightweight bullets shooting to point of aim. The last .38 110 +P I tried took every bit of the elevation screw on my 4” Model 66 and still printed 2” low at 50’.
