A late family friend flew B17's with the 8th Air Force and was shot down by AAA and captured in 1943. His opinion was that once P51's were able to escort bombers all the way into and out of Germany, then our bomber losses were much reduced. He claimed that Germany maintained plentiful and effective AAA until the end. Large bomber crews contributed to the great number of allied pow's.
