DotW 22: SHO FAST (or, 25yd SHO bullseye practice)

Please read the rules before participating in this thread.

    Week 22: SHO FAST
results may be posted until 11:59pm EST on Monday 5-March-2012.

    Range: 7yd
Target: 3x5 card and 8" circle
Start position: concealed or retention holster, arms relaxed at sides ("at sides" does not mean in front of your legs)
    Rounds fired: 60

This is just running the F.A.S.T. ten times using your strong hand only for the draw, reload, and all shots fired.

Only run this week's drill if you have formal professional instruction in the proper way to draw and reload using only your strong hand and you are confident you can do so safely. There are a variety of things that can go wrong if you don't know what you're doing and some of those "wrongs" involve bullets entering your body.

Please report the following when you post your results in this thread:
    • holster used
    • score for each run (includes penalties for misses)
    • draw and reload for each run

If you cannot perform this drill, the alternative DotW is as follows:

    Range: 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25yd
Target: the Tom_Jones B16 replacement center
    Start position: any
    Rounds fired: 50

Fire ten rounds at each distance. Use a separate target for each distance to make scorekeeping easier. Shots that land off the paper score zero.

Please report the following when you post your results in this thread:
    • score for each distance

Training with firearms is an inherently dangerous activity. Be sure to follow all safety protocols when using firearms or practicing these drills. These drills are provided for information purposes only. Use at your own risk.

Clarification: when you say "reload strong hand only" you're talking about one of the various methods of placing your pistol somewhere, and using only your strong hand to grab the magazine, etc?

By strong hand only I mean you cannot use your weak/support/other/left-if-God-made-you-properly hand to do anything. It cannot help clear your cover garment for the draw or reload, it cannot touch the gun or magazine for anything. It's as if that hand got chopped off. If you have a hard time keeping that hand under control, bring a tennis ball with you to the range and clench it with that hand throughout the drill.

18.19 (-H), 2.97 draw, 9.47 reload. Note to self: it helps to drop a mag before sticking a gun between legs.
    13.19, 3.50 draw, 6.97 reload
    15.30 (-H, -B), 3.16 draw, 5.99 reload
    14.16 (-B), 2.85 draw, 7.18 reload
    20.01 (-H, -H, -B, -B) 3.14 draw, 7.6 reload
    12.97, 3.03 draw, 6.66 reload
    11.96, 3.23 draw, 6.11 reload
    13.17, 3.35 draw, 6.90 reload
17.92 (-H, -H, -B), 2.82 draw, 6.53 reload. The harder you try, the worse they come out.
    13.39, 3.09 draw, 7.14 reload.

    So, what's a coin-winning time for a SHO F.A.S.T. ?

P30 LEM/GGI trigger, CCC's Shaggy and BMC, wool sweater for a cover garment.

Holster used: modified Blade-Tech Nano, AIWB concealed with a t-shirt

Score for each run/draw and reload for each run:

    1: 12.59 (9.59 –1 H, -1B), 1.72 draw, 5.72 reload
    2: 13.04 clean, 1.56 draw, 8.99 reload (slide didn’t lock back)
    3: 11.45 (9.45 –1 H), 2.13 draw, 5.06 reload
    4: 13.10 (9.10 –2 H), 1.54 draw, 5.39 reload
5: 19.78 clean, 1.66 draw, 15.90 reload (slide didn’t lock back, shirt got seriously in the way of the reload)
6: 26.16 (24.16 –1H), 2.73 draw, 19.17 reload (slide didn’t lock back, forgot to drop empty mag, took multiple attempts to rack the slide on leg/gear)
    7: 9.30 clean, 1.84 draw, 5.27 reload
8: 11.19 clean, 1.81 draw, 7.24 reload (slide didn’t lock back, but it got solved relatively smoothly unlike some other runs)
    9: 9.17 clean, 1.92 draw, 5.02 reload
    10: 9.44 clean, 1.75 draw, 5.65 reload

    Well this was interesting.

I was kind of squirrelly on a few of the early runs, but, regardless of that, was relatively happy with the shooting part of this drill. I screwed up royally at one point and forgot to drop the empty mag before holstering the gun to start reloading it. Evidently, I also press the slide stop lever with my strong hand thumb when shooting SHO, because the slide failed to lock back several times and I had to rack it from the slide closed position on my pants or holster or mag pouches.

One thing I was very happy with was the 8” circle shooting. I just put them in there like a machine. No nerves, no flinching, no slop, just focus on the front sight and see the sights in place for every shot. Only missed one on the first run.

Given what I’ve been working on lately, I am happy that where I blew it was more on SHO reloads than the marksmanship.

    Marksmanship-wise, 3x5 shots were: 15/20 = 75% hits

8” circle shots were: 39/40 = 97.5% hits, woo hoo!

    Overall: 54/60 = 90% hits

Start position: Gen 4 G17 in Archangel AIWB, closed-front fleece, Ky-tac mag pouch

    01: 11.62 (11.62 C) 2.60 draw, 5.80 reload
    02: 11.82 (10.82 -1B) 2.48 draw, 5.55 reload
    03: 14.79 (10.79 -2H) 1.95 draw, 5.98 reload
    04: 9.70 (9.70 C!) 1.92 draw, 5.37 reload
    05: 12.28 (9.28 -1H -1B) 1.86 draw, 5.10 reload
    06: 11.28 (9.28 -1H) 1.86 draw, 5.37 reload
    07: 12.69 (10.69 -1H) 1.86 draw, 6.02 reload
    08: 9.26 (9.26 C!) 2.07 draw, 5.03 reload
    09: 14.08 (9.08 -2H -1B) 1.80 draw, 5.11 reload
    10: 10.26 (10.26 C) 2.13 draw, 5.78 reload

Ave Time including penalties: 11.78 s
    Best: 9.26 (clean!)
    Worst: 14.79 (not clean!)

    Ave draw: 2.05 (Best: 1.80, Worst: 2.60)
    Ave reload: 5.51 (Best: 5.03, Worst: 6.02)

[sigh] I've really got to let myself take that extra 0.2 seconds to set the shot before I take it. And not yanking the trigger would probably help, too.

Average Time without penalties was 10.07, and the times when I worked the trigger properly, and took that extra time to make certain of the shot, not only were faster due to no penalties, but they were some of my best runs overall anyway! (Average time for just the clean runs was 10.21.)

Aiming and trigger control works, who woulda thunk it?

    (Head Hits: 13/20 = 65% Bleh. Body Hits: 37/40 = 92.5% ~okay.)
