It's been a while since I looked at the procedure, but if I recall, one of the challenges is a cross pin that is ground down flush with the frame and polished till it blends in. Removing and replacing it requires refinishing.

So then, I saw another one of these at the LGS today, so I asked to check it out. This time, going in knowing it was a total porker, I was actually sort of smitten. The trigger wasn’t bad, the sights were good, and the weight would help soak up recoil in a way that makes a GP look like a 3" k-frame.
I kinda want one now.

Pachmayr Presentation Grips work really well for me with my 4" Redhawk. I sometimes wish they wouldn't, as they are just about the ugliest grip I've ever seen, but they really do help soak up recoil from stouter .44 Magnum loads very well.
(Pachmayr advertises those as good for people with large hands. I do not have large hands, yet I have no problem with the grip being too big.)
I had an early Redhawk that was wicked-accurate. Tightest lockup I"ve ever seen on a revolver.

Have you tried the Hogue 80010 grip? Much more svelte than those tamer grips.
