Funny this thread came up. All last week Grizzly21 and I were teaching firearms to a new group of cadets.

I will tell you what I told them. Keep your personal and professional life void of turmoil. Pay your bills, if you drink booze do it responsibly, and stay away from badge bunnies. All those will get your job.

Being proficient with your firearm is important. Equally, if not more important is being able to think on your feet. Know your elements that make up the laws. The more you know the easier it will be to articulate what you did on any given call.

I do backgrounds now as part of my job. Don’t lie to the investigator. If they’re any good they’ll know you are lying and dig until they find it. I recently did a background and found out the guy was a gang member, which he denied.

There is a lot of sage advise in this thread so I won’t regurgitate it.
