Perhaps genetics is a factor. Genetics aside, let me say that stupidity, when modeled for others, can be learned because it's a behavior. Part of the payoff in this instance is the cool factor as perceived by others in the actors' subgroup. When I was young, because I played good harp(harmonica), I got laid more frequently than nerds who couldn't play.
Kinda the same thing except that I was not stupid, and I was not a social
