I have observed that a person's identity-level understandings about the nature of the individual, individual responsibility and the relationship of the individual to the government correlate quite well with how that person self-identifies on a liberal-conservative spectrum.

I'm more disinclined to use "Liberal/Conservative" or even "Left/Right" these days. As per Blair's Law, the Whackadoodle Alt-Right and the Loonytoons Ctrl-Left have pretty much passed the event horizon and started to kind of meld and merge.

I think "Statist/Individualist" is a better description. Because I don't care if Big Brother wants to stamp on my face with his Left boot, or Right boot. I'm not going to celebrate if the Alt-Right puts me in a camp instead of Communist.

I'm not even sure I'd use "statist/individualist" as much as "party affiliate/individual." The Libertarian Party pushes a number of non-statist ideas that I think are absolute non-starters despite being closer in alignment to them than anyone else.

I could probably get along with the Democrats if they weren't so eager to nail me to the wall for being a gun owner, and could also get along with the Republicans if they weren't so eager to throw me over said wall for being Hispanic. Instead, they, like almost all parties, seem to be consolidating and narrowing their viewpoints to where if you're out of line on one thing or another, you're now "the enemy."

If I had to pick a political figure to align myself with at this point, it'd probably be Snake Plissken. "President of what?"

In reality there is not a dime's worth of difference between Communists and National Socialists. Oh sure they like fighting each other in the streets (I suspect many of them are there precisely for the opportunity to mix it up). And they denounce each other to the ends of the earth. And yes one wants to kill other people based on race and religion while the other wants the killing done according to economic status (though increasingly race and religion factor in as well), but both want to control everyone that they don't kill. Historically the National Socialists had the snappier uniforms and the Communist secret police had the better handguns (Mauser C-96's being very cool by definition).

The "ideas"(such as they are) of both groups stem from similar roots and if either group gained power again most of us would be hauled out and shot as enemies of the people (which, in my case might have some justification).

One of the biggest ironies of WWII is that the Soviets became more nationalistic as war progressed, while the Nazis became more international.

Suddenly Latvians and Ukrainians became almost Aryan! Funny how that works. Meanwhile in Moscow Jews started to become "cosmopolitans."
