The Taos area is hard, and I mean *hard* left.

This translates into yes you can find specific irrefutable ties to terrorism, weapons, lots of malnourished children, testimony from those children that they were being taught to attack other children with firearms, at school and also find a child's corpse on the property and it's not going to hold water because; political correctness.

So the only stuff that sticks is the child abuse charges because that's the only one that doesn't cross into political correctness territory.

Interesting. It's been about 20 years since I spent time there. How do they feel about gun control given their unwillingness to prosecute the matters you mentioned?

Northern NM is a strange place. Thankfully we have state pre-emption, which was challenged by the City of Santa Fe recently but it was largely political grandstanding and virtue-signalling.

It wouldn't really be weird at all to see a crusty dude wearing a leather holster with an N-frame or Blackhawk anywhere in northern NM, and it wouldn't be particularly unwelcome in most places either.
But voting trends are very much solid blue without exception. Southern NM is very much red, and open carry and 2A is cherished and celebrated down there, but that's the difference between the ranchers in the south and the north's eccentric blend of old Taos reiki hippies, Santa Fe's millionaire socialists, the grumpy old Spanish families that can trace their owned lands to the 1500's, and the blend of folks that end up moving there because of the politics, weather, and distance from big cities.
There are lots of wealthy Cali ex-pats in Santa Fe and Taos, and seeing Hollywood celebrities is pretty common in those areas as many of them own large properties in the region.

As far as 2A specifically in that region - I believe some flavors of human being could claim ownership of arms for self-defense and protection from persecution, and the local political machine would rally around that as justified. But if you weren't one of those specific flavors of human being, ownership of arms is evil and they're all racist and evil.

It's all just a big misunderstanding ..... and after 1,400 years, a rather lengthy misunderstanding.

Not a state charge and the particular MN Judge is notorious for setting low bail for violent offenders.
