    Interesting ammo kaboom tonight

I was out shooting tonight and had an interesting kaboom. I THINK it was an overcharged round that blew the primer out the back and caused the casing to swell excessively, which caused it to get stuck, which caused it to FTE, which caused this:

I had to field strip the pistol and take a rod and punch the casing out. Ammo was Freedom Munitions 147RN remanufactured. I’ve shot thousands of rounds of FM pistol ammo and this is the first issue I’ve had. I’ve heard others have had bad luck with FM, but this is the first issue in 7 or 8 thousand rounds.

Oh, yeah. Thanks for asking. I immediately could tell something bad had happened from the sound/recoil. I was just starting on #6 in The Casino Drill. I just stopped and tried to analyze what happened. At first I thought the nose of the next round had detonated the primer, but after thinking about it more decided that wasn’t the case. I inspected the gun and no obvious issues. Shot a few more rounds with it (duty ammo GD 124 +P) to make sure.

    Glad you are OK.

I've seen a few issues with FM ammo over the years but what really put me off them was an incident a few years back I was a student in a Practical Fundamentals class with Bruce Gray and Jerry Jones.
Two shooters had a total of 3 squibs, from two separate lots of FM 9mm in the space of an hour. The shooters were from out of town and had the ammo drop shipped. Everyone pitched in ammo so they could finish the class.

In nearly 30 years of shooting, including three as full time academy instructor I've never seen that many severe ammo issues at the same time and place.

I am glad it wasn’t more serious. I use to shoot a lot of FM Roman Ammo when prices were high, but I noticed a lot of variance in quality of cases and seating depths, so I switched to their new Ammo. Now prices are such It is not worth even messing with FM, at least not Reman.

That corresponds with what I’ve heard from other people. I’ve been fortunate with the ammo I’ve bought from them. I won’t buy any more, but I’ve no regrets. I shot another 150 or so after that without issue. I’ve shot a couple thousand reman 556 ammo of theirs and only had 1 issue.

I'm at the point I would rather shoot Russian steel case than FM.

SGAmmo had some 9mm Barnaul for $140 per thousand recently (plus shipping). It's hard to pass up at that price.

Hey, consider it one more CZ proof round, fired post factory.

I am glad you're okay, but this is one more reason why the only reloads I will ever fire come off MY Dillon presses.
