    Week 274: Stoplight

    Week 274: Stoplight

Results may be posted until July 22nd, 2018.

    Designed by: backtrail540
    Range: Varies
    Target: Vertical 3x5 card
    Start Position: Ready
    Rounds Fired: Varies

I'd like to thank backtrail540 for his latest contribution to the Drill of the Week! This is an excellent and well-constructed drill.

No time limits. Choose the starting distance you want. Engage the 3x5 card with one round SHO (strong hand only) and one round WHO (weak hand only.) If both are hits, move back one yard and reengage with one round SHO and one round WHO, adding a yard every time both hits are made. If only one round hits, reengage from the same distance with one round SHO and one round WHO until either both are hits or both are misses. If both are misses then the drill is over and your score is your last successful yardage where you made both hits.

    In other words:

Green light (go) = both hits, move back one yard
Yellow light (stay) = one hit, try again same distance
Red light (stop, drill over) = both misses

Please report the following when you post your results in this thread:

    Pistol used
    Start distance
    Total number of missed shots
    Ending distance (final score)
    Anything you noticed

Training with firearms is an inherently dangerous activity. Be sure to follow all safety protocols when using firearms or practicing these drills. These drills are provided for information purposes only. Use at your own risk.

    Very nice drill!

    I used a G19 with Ameriglo sights.

Distance started was 15 yards. However, I moved back in increments of 5 yards rather than 1 yard, time being of the essence with the schedule.

    15 all green

    20 yards all green

25 yards 2 yellows, but barely out of the card.

30 yards 3 yellows, 1 very off right. My shaky left hand really showed here.

35 yards 1 yellow, 1 red. This was my limit.

What really jumped out at me was the amount of "wobble zone." At 20 and beyond you really have to trust that the front sight is mostly in the zone, just time the shot right and it will be darn close.

Another thing I noticed was that my left hand was much more shaky than my right, but the unsteadiness became less the more I shot it.

On another note, I tried this drill freestyle (two hands) at 50 yards and was able to achieve 50 yard green after 2 yellows. The dry practice with the support hand really paid off for this drill. Excellent course of fire. I may use this in class for a man on man shootoff for a prize...

    Week 274: Stoplight

    Wow I need this drill.

I’ve been thinking vaguely about training SHO and WHO after performing poorly on my USPSA classifiers.

Busy today but hope to fit in a range session Sunday.

    Thank you Gabe.

Cool drill! I will shoot it this weekend and report back. I’d be surprised if I can make it to 7 Yards.

30 Yards on a 3x5 Is super impressive!

Thank you. But, I took my time and really dialed the shots in, especially with my support hand that shook like it owed somebody money. If the pistol was out at extension too long, then I just pulled the pistol back, let my eyes rest, and went through the shot setup sequence again. A par time would have brought things in to a closer distance red light.

For those with TDA pistols, is the idea to shoot both shots DA? SA? Or do two rounds, one each way? (I mean, I'll probably end up doing the last option anyway, but it's always nice to know what the stage designers intent was. )

Back when i ran da/sa guns i simply took every first shot of a string da and subsequent shots sa and since i decock when coming off target i would just shoot it all DA myself but whichever gets someone working the drill is cool, really.
