    Another Malkoff EDC "Build"

    One of the aspects I appreciate the most about Malkoff products is the ability configure a light to ones needs. One of my EDC lights is configured using a 1-CR123 body, using a 700mah 16340 rechargeable cell to power a M61N drop-in;

    This is an extremely carry-friendly light with about 20 minutes of full output run time before dropping into direct-drive mode as voltage decreases. For normal EDC use, the run time is adequate.

    With a Low Light Pistol Operator class at the Sig Academy coming up, I wanted to extend the run time of the light so I purchased a 2-CR123 body. This body will accept a 2500 mah 16650 cell or a pair of standard CR123 lithium cells to power the same M61N drop-in. The result is a longer but still very pocket-friendly configuration;

    With either a single 16650 Li-ion cell or a pair of CR123 cells, full output run time is around 90 minutes. Additionally, I find the longer body easier to grip and allows the bezel to fully clear the hand.

    For those interested here is the list of parts used to assemble this light;

    Thanks for posting. I was actually about to PM you for exact specs on some of your other smaller lights. I tried to figure it out on the Malkoff site, but they have one of the worst web commerce pages I’ve ever seen. It’s a wonder they can stay in business.

    Would you post builds for some of your other lights? Thanks!

    I've been curious about these Malkoff builds since I first saw one of your posts a while back.

    The next light I'm thinking on is the Nitecore MT1C because the preset mode of Turbo and Low that is chosen by twisting the bezel. http://flashlight.nitecore.com/product/mt1c

    What I don't like about it are the extra modes. I'd rather have a light with just a high and a low. What kind of light can be built similar to the MT1C but with just high and low using these Malkoff parts? Rechargable batteries are a plus

    This company being just an hour away from me is pretty cool too

    The MDC bodies seen in OP's post are compatible with all E-series heads, so the Malkoff VME head would fit, and so would the Malkoff E2 replacements.

    MDC bodies can be found here: https://malkoff-devices.myshopify.co...llaneous-items

    2xCR123
    2xAA
    1xCR123
    1xAA

    Then add a head that fits;

    E2 Super Throw - 20000 lux, 550 lumens
    E2 Super Scout - 12000 lux, 700 lumens
    VME head, do not forget the O-ring set and a module.

    It's important to keep the voltage of the different heads and modules in mind - the E2 heads, for example, need 6V so will not work with the AA bodies or the 1xCR123.

    I built my own in this fashion using the 2xAA MDC body, a VME head I already had, and the M31 module.

    Of course, I neglected to buy the gasket package which is why you can spy a red paper gasket in there, I had to improvise.

    My pleasure!

    I have the following two EDC lights set up as single-output using the M61N drop-in;

    https://malkoff-devices.myshopify.co...-concepts-head

    To use a single 16340 Li-ion rechargeable battery any of these drop-ins;
    https://malkoff-devices.myshopify.co...-etc-6-9-volts

    To use a single standard CR123 battery, any of these drop-ins;

    https://malkoff-devices.myshopify.co...-concepts-head

    To use a 16650 Li-ion rechargeable battery OR two CR123 batteries, any of these drop-ins;
    https://malkoff-devices.myshopify.co...-etc-6-9-volts

    For greater output but with shorter run time, any of these 9P drop-ins;
    https://malkoff-devices.myshopify.co...etc-9-12-volts

    Use a pair of 16340 cells for the 9P drop-ins.

    This is a 6P size, dual-output version of the light above that uses an 18650 Li-ion rechargeable cell for longer run time. Paired with the high-low bezel switch, offers two output levels with a twist of the bezel;

    https://malkoff-devices.myshopify.co...ant=6892997635

    https://malkoff-devices.myshopify.co...estseller&fp=5

    Any of the following drop-ins;
    https://malkoff-devices.myshopify.co...-etc-6-9-volts

    For greater output (but less run time), you can also use any of the 9P drop-ins with a pair of 18350 Li-ion rechargeable cells.

    This is a true 6P-size pocket rocket - a Wildcat v.6 head on the MD2 body with Tricap. It runs on a pair of 18350 Li-ion rechargeable cells. Only about 20 minutes of full output run time on high (1,000+ lumens) but will run all night on low, which still provides very useful illumination. The Wildcat is a flood pattern light with a soft edge. I'm using the neutral 4000k version and the color temperature is beautiful.

    More of a long range spot pattern (1,000 lumens, 29,000 lux) the Hound Dog 18650 has a nice wide spill and remains very useful on the low setting. Runs strictly on a single 18650 cell;

    https://malkoff-devices.myshopify.co...8650-head-only

    With the standard tail cap also makes for a kick-ass WML;

    The following was purchased as a complete light and is perhaps my favorite out of the entire bunch;

    Wildcat v.6 in 4000k neutral ordered with the MD3 body and Tricap, I run it on a pair of 18500 Li-ion rechargeable cells. The beautiful beam pattern and color, high CRI, decent run time (especially on low) and Malkoff quality make me smile every time I use it.

    There are many other combinations that can be assembled but these are the ones I use myself.

    Pretty cool, you can switch things around between your WML and EDC light!

    Question: how does this compare to the Fenix PD35 Tac for $72? I’ve been using the Fenix and think it’s amazing.

    In terms of light output they are probably using the exact same LED, and these days the Chicom lights have decent optics too.

    What you're paying extra for is that these are made in Alabama, not in communist China, and the extreme durability of these lights. These lights are more durable than Surefires and can sit on a 12 gauge with no problem.

    I hope we can avoid turning this into yet another "I can buy a Chinese import cheaper" thread.

    To answer the question as diplomatically as possible, with both in-hand you will notice that the Malkoff is built heavier, has fully potted electronics for shock/impact resistance, honest output and run time ratings, and a simple no-nonsense UI. Malkoff lights are renown for their durability, dependability and second-to-none customer service. They are made by a small company in the U.S.A. who has been serving the military and LE for decades.

    If you're interested in a top-tier, U.S. made light that will last a lifetime, I can strongly recommend Malkoff. I hope this helps...
