    Shovels

I was reading the Wisdom from my wife thread and the discussion turned to shovels. So rather than continue in that one, I will ask - what's a good compact folding shovel to put in the vehicle.

    For example, Amazon has https://www.amazon.com/IUNIO-Multito...folding+shovel

    There's the Glock one.

    Thoughts?

It doesn't fold, but the Cold Steel Special Forces shovel might be the best compact shovel out there. It usually doesn't come with the sheath but you'll want to get one.

I have had one of those for years. Got it at an Army surplus store. It has been used for all kinds of things for about 25 years. Don't fall for something like the Amazon one. When are you going have to remove a nail, or cut something with a tool like that ? You probably have the right tool for that. I do recommend the one with the pick axe. It is useful. Most of mine have been used in camping Boy Scouts, my sons Boy Scouts, and camping with my wife. Has a permanent ride in all trucks.

I'll second the Cold Steel. Get the sheath, too.

Yes, I should have mentioned the sheath is not included (usually. I've seen one or two websites that include it) but you will want to get the sheath to go with it.

Well that's a better price. Back when I got mine I had to order them separate and I shelled out about $30 for both.

    Been carrying one of these in the trunk for as long as I can remember. Very compact when folded up. It hasn't seen any use but seems adequate for emergency purposes;

I keep a plain ol' GI folding E-Tool in the truck.

Jump on Tom's link for the Cold Steel: https://www.amazon.com/Cold-Steel-92...ec51a9a0dca8c4

I might buy another one myself at that price. The sheaths were unavailable when I bought mine unless you paid a big premium for a bundle. They are available on Amazon now:

    https://www.amazon.com/Cold-Steel-SC...+shovel+sheath

The reason I mention the sheath is that they take a mean edge.

Appropriate to today: My father, an infantry officer who completed Ranger school shortly after the Korean War (and had some studs as both cadre and classmate), passed along to me at a young age (along with the L-shaped ambush) the sharpened E-tool's utility for a variety of purposes as it was taught to him there.

I knew the Cold Steel shovel was essentially a commercial variant of the Russian army e-tool, but didn't know its origins until today:

I suppose the question is - what do you need the shovel for?

Here in the land of snow and winter - I have one of these in the car at the first sign of snowfall - https://www.amazon.com/Lifeline-4004...ct+snow+shovel

I also have a WW2-era E-Tool and Pick Mattock combo that I carry any time I do off-roading/back country work.
