Why would I, as a Texas LEO, “focus on” clothing associated with a wholesome, legitimate activity?

I’m no LEO, but seing a civvie in typical muted tac-attire seems worthy of minor note, but not enough to get excited about or even all that interested in unless behavior warrants it.

Is a better answer than I could come up with.

I pay attention when I see people like dressed in The Garb Of Our Tribe and I'm not a cop. Even if what I'm doing is wholesome and legitimate I don't want to draw attention (police or otherwise) to myself on any level.

Problem is, it works well enough I’ve started wearing it other than shooting. SWMBO has provided negative feedback that ‘I look like a Goober’. Clearly I’m not a social butterfly, but what non-Tactical hats do you guys like?

Not a fan of trucker mesh / CAT / Plastic tab versions. Looking on Amazon, I found a few Dad Hats (what the heck is a Dad Hat?!) in twill / cloth that look promising.

I'd say a local state or popular university hat would be pretty lowkey and blend in. Example: I only wear fitted Texas A&M baseball caps.

Most of my hats are Cabella's. I have one that says Estes Park and one that says Alaska and none of them have elicited any kind of response.

I try to stay off people's radar for any reason. I've actually had a woman follow me through Monument Valley Park because she liked my CU Buffs hat and wanted to talk about "Ralphie" (the name of the CU Buffs buffalo). So I avoid anything "team" related.

I'll share one marginally relevant story:

A few years ago we were about to start up a construction management project on a sketchy coastal site that harbored a fair number of squatters with substance abuse issues. The task of meeting with the County Sheriff to brief him on what to expect fell on me, along with the Director of my client, a regional government entity.

So I'm sitting there with the top law enforcement guy in the county, he listens, he looks me up and down for effect, and then says "you won't have any problems. Your shirt is tucked in, to them you're an authority figure."

Turned out he was right.

Couple years ago, I walked into a Walgreens to buy some normal stuff, and they had cheap, plain, khaki ball caps for about $6. Bought one; very low-key.
