Ordered a copy.
Ordered a copy.
Ordered. I went to a presentation Gordon McMneil put on in the late 90s, not long after my own encounter with a rifle armed suspect. Getting to hear from the participants in thing like this is a valuable part of training.
Ordered as well.
So just how crazy was Miami in the 80s?
Pretty crazy. Didn't you watch Miami Vice?
(It was enough of a lure that when I was contacted and recruited while working in NYC I didn't hesitate for a moment to accept the lateral reassignment.)
In truth I don't really think it was that different from most cities in many respects crime-wise. What set it apart was the marriage of international narcotics trafficking, money laundering and the banking industry. The fact that it was the gateway to South America made it the perfect hub at the time.

There's nothing civil about this war.
In the book Ed describes the environment they were working in thusly:
"The Miami [field office] area of responsibility stretched from Ft. Pierce in the north to Key West in the south, and to Naples in the West. During the year between April 1985 and April 1986 there was a bank or armored truck robbery every day in Miami's territory. Occasionally there were up to five robberies in a single day."
...so, pretty crazy.
There's a reason why Florida passed shall-issue concealed carry laws in 1985 and kept at it until a governor signed it in 1987. It was pretty fuckin' sporty in Florida back then.
Still is, really.
