I got to meet Ed and spend an afternoon with him in November 1994 when he came and presented at the then Metro-Dade Police Academy. I was attending an Officer Survival Instructor Course (week long) that they presented. The course was excellent and to get to hear the story from Ed in person was one of life's great moments. One thing he said during the presentation stuck with me ever since (and did so especially when I was a working cop). He said that they went out that Friday just to check the box on their case work and weren't expecting to actually run into Platt and Matix. He implied that attitude may have put them at a bit of disadvantage and I'd think that's exactly the case. When we go out there on the hunt, we should go with the belief that hard times are coming and we're ready to handle them. Not doing so can lead to bad times.

Wonder if we might have crossed paths back then, Wayne. I was frequently at the facility on 58th St. from the late 80's on...for SRT and other training, various qualifications, and gym privileges.
Looks like another good book to add to the list.

We wouldn't have crossed paths as that was the only time I was there. That week was very interesting from several standpoints:
1. The only time I was ever part of training where they briefed all hands on Sunday evening before the class with warnings not to leave the host hotel premises without their escort, not to be in the jai alai venue, the topless bar behind, etc. unless we wanted to get assaulted/killed.
2. Being told (long before LEOSA) that they highly recommended we always be armed in that locale. The class was about 40 officers from all over the US and carrying guns outside our respective states was a crap shoot back then.
3. The training was superior and covered many skill sets and scenarios.
4. On the Sunday morning afterwards, getting ready to fly back to DFW, I nearly had to shoot a guy who was trying to present the "opening ceremony" of an armed robbery at a gas station while I gassed up my rent car. That was in the days when rentals were easily identifiable in FL and I was near the airport. Those who know me know that my size keeps most assholes at bay, but this guy gave it a try. Some MUC tactics (way before Craig Douglas had that class) helped the guy on his way.

Those were hard times for German tourists...
