    S&W red/orange ramp insert replacement

I have a S&W 686-1 with a orange plastic insert on the ramp. I'm sure many of you are familiar with this typical S&W set up. My question is this: is there an alternative insert for the dovetail slot? I found a Meprolight sight set up that says it's for the red ramp front, does this mean it with fit the 686? It's a tritium lamp and from the picture it looks like it might fit but pictures can be deceiving.

    Thanks,

If it looks like this, then I think it was designed to fit the factory dovetail for the front sight insert.

The path of least resistance will seldom get you where you need to be.

Yes, that is the exact picture and product I saw. I wanted to make sure this is what I think it is before I buy.

Yes, that will fit. I installed a couple sets when I carried a wheel gun as a duty weapon.

I recall a gunsmith in the Memphis area back in the late 90's would replace the red plastic insert with gold that he procured by buying old wedding bands from pawnshops and hand-fitting them into the dovetail.

    How tricky is the install?

Not hard at all. The rear sight on an S&W revolver is pretty straight forward and easily replaced and the front insert drifts in just like a conventional sight.
