    RFI: Steel Toe Shoes

I started a new job in March. I’m traveling to a facility next week where I need to wear steel toe shoes.

Any advice on good brands or types?

Ideally I’m looking for low tops, not boots, suitable for all day wear. Style would be leather uppers, brown in color, lace up.

Gore Tex a plus but not required.

    Thanks.

    Rich

Redwing and Georgia boots make good ones. I think they both make shoes and ankle high boots

I have a pair of RedWings that I've had for about 30 years. They have seen fairly light use (for a steel toed boot, I assume), but I still wear them to mow the lawn. My Red Wings are boots, but they do have steel toes oxfords.

I use Keens that look like hiking boots and love them.

What is the work surface, concrete or open ground?

90% of my work is on concrete. I value wedge/non-heeled soles for comfort. However some site or employer rules stipulate at least a 1/2 block heel to help prevent slips on ladder rungs. Also, comfort shock type soles are generally heel type soles. And comfort shock soles help with hard surfacr heel strike common to heeled work boots.

Sounds like you are sure ankles don't need to be covered.

Composite toe/sole shank are arguably better in cold exposure or where overnight or changeover cold soak is an issue.

My personal choice for the last 7yrs have been Thorogood boots, SuperFeet insoles and Wigwam socks. Wigwam is affordable and don't tend to stink like most others outside of expensive socks.

Keen has a safety line, nice soles for open ground Danner has a yuge selection of boots.

    Both.

Factory locations are indoors, light and medium industrial w machinery / assembly.

Outside Job sites are CONUS and OCONUS building / construction areas.

Generally I’m the office guy holding a clipboard; no actual work.

Get composite toe. Better comfort and better in the event it actually has to do its job.

Composite will rebound, steel will stay deformed into your foot.

Heel and Vibram traction sole fit the bill, just a PITA to clean off sometimes.

Keens - if you travel a lot try to get composite toes so TSA screening friendly (assuming TSA Precheck!)
