Thread: Detroit?!?!

    Detroit?!?!

Business calls to Detroit… thank goodness for CCW reciprocity!

I'm staying for a couple of nights and trying to figure out where to stay. I'm sure the downtown chain hotels are safe enough, but for touristy reasons my preference would be a nice town outside of the city – even a reasonable drive is ok, as I've never been to Michigan and I hear parts of it are lovely. That being said I'm open to any suggestions on how to make the most of a two-day trip there: food, outdoorsy places to go, fun little towns to walk around, etc. Please give me something to look forward to!

My son used to live in Lake Orion. It's out a ways from Detroit but has a brewery and
some other interesting spots. A small town with quite a bit of traffic because of the highway that
    runs through it.

Williams Gun Sights, in Davison, has an indoor range and a whole lot of new and used guns. It's even farther out
but might be worth going to.

BNektar meadery in Ferndale makes very good mead. My son tries to get there every time he's in
    the Detroit area.

I have heard there are fishing charters available on the Detroit River. Seen folks on TV boating
walleyes and looking at the city skyline from the water.

I have not been to Greenfield Village but probably should go.

Ann Arbor....Plymouth.....Troy....Gross Pointe.....Port Huron.....all offer something a bit different. If staying downtown go for the Illitch's Motor City Casino/Hotel....right at Comerica Park, the new Red Wings Stadium....Olympia Theater......Ford Field. And a ton of food places including the Hockey town Cafe and Cheli's Chili Bar.

If you are into fancy and unusual cocktails, a little bar called Standby located in a weirdly artsy alley in downtown Detroit has an extraordinary menu. It also has an impressive list of whiskeys. First time I ever had PVW was at the Standby. The food was quite good as well.

I second The Henry Ford. Also there are still tours of the Rouge Plant.

Downtown Birmingham is kind of torn up right now. Downtown Royal Oak, Downtown Ferndale, and Downtown Rochester Hills are all nice areas to hang out in and eat. Nice hotels not far from any of those areas.

Things to see and do? Detroit Institute of Arts, local sports, breweries abound, B. Nektar is cool, there’s a few ranges in the area (Close Quarters Tactical in Utica and Target Sports 2 in Keego Harbor) that will allow drawing from the holster if they deem you safe enough to do so.
