    Universal Basic Income (California...of course...)

    Universal Basic Income

Later this year, Stockton, a city in California with a 25% poverty rate, will conduct an unusual experiment: Roughly 100 of its citizens will receive $500 a month for 12-18 months, with no work requirements and no strings attached. Researchers likely will regularly assess the recipients’ health, childcare arrangements, education, and general well-being in order to measure how this kind of financial leg up affects quality of life. The grant, from the Economic Security Project, is a privately funded experiment in “universal basic income,” a policy idea crafted from the premise that every citizen should receive a regular stipend from the government to cover their basic needs.

Well of course, I mean, why get off the boobie when there are people convinced you're entitled to one.

$50,000 grant from a "privately funded experiment" to give 100 people $500 for 12-18 months is one thing, funding it for across the state of Commiefornia is something entirely different, and likely wouldn't come from the "Economic Security Project." Sounds like more Lefty socialist ideas to win votes. Vote for Blue, kick back and relax, we'll coddle you!

'While we continue to deprive you and those citizens who actually pay taxes, (to fund these wonderful social programs), of those silly rights we've determined you no longer need. Let's call it the Super Patriot Act.'

Yep. Things are really looking up.

Guaranteed the results of this program will PROVE that giving people money for doing nothing is the answer to every problem.

I'm nothing approaching an economist, but the idea may have a few kernels of merit. From the article:

A guaranteed income has some traction on the right and the left. The conservative case for UBI, articulated by Noah J. Gordon, writing for the Atlantic, argues that a cash payment to each citizen should replace our current patchwork system of social-welfare programs.
As much as I loathe entitlement (and I do loathes me some entitlement), our current suite of programs that attempt to help out folks in need are monstrously inefficient at best, and untenable catastrophes at worst. So while my inner idealist is clawing his face, my inner pragmatist is saying, "Fuck it - let's try something else."

But but but, I saw a video on facebook and this works in Europe and everything is better over there.

$500 a month, what will be the next program to the get most of these people through the remaining 29 days after payday?
Whether you think you can or you can't, you're probably right.

Maybe they can put them into a medically induced coma and an IV drip for a few weeks after they get their buzz on...

I wonder how much of that $500 will be used for things that are strictly necessities.

I wonder how likely it is that the recipients will gladly give up their $500/mo after the trial period.

I wonder if this will make the recipients more likely to seek gainful employment.

I wonder if California taxpayers will receive Christmas cards from the recipients of the $500/mo.

I wonder if California wonders any of these things.

An allowance from Uncle Sam. Wonder if that'll engender any sense of respect towards Stockton's civil servants.
